General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsYou know what pisses me off? I'm seeing all these threads about negative info and reactions
relating to Trump and his administration, as it were.
Yet Brian Williams and his deluded panel can only push the "democrats in disarray" bullshit.
That really, truly angers me.
That's how we got stuck with this orange buffoon in the first place.

(58,785 posts)shockingly remiss in not making a special major television appearance to call Trump out for the crime of soliciting China's interference in the election. Unbelievable that the Democrats' chances at impeachment were going down the tubes from neglect as they were goofing off in two different states doing other things too unimportant to mention, yada, yada, blah, blah, yada blah.
I was surprised at first because continuing events all day had caused me to think we were doing great and the Republicans were in big trouble, not the opposite. Turned it off.
I just wanted to post about this. Had to turn off the program because it was his same old mantra. I rarely watch his show anymore but gave it a chance. Ffs, even Chuck Todd took a better overall approach today.

(10,721 posts)...Democratic leadership should have immediately pounced on Trump's China comment. Pelosi or Schiff (if not both) should have immediately had a press conference stating, "Crimes committed out in the open are still crimes."
Surrogates and talk show hosts aren't enough. We need Dem. leadership to get in front of cameras as soon as things like that happen.
Trump is not trying to self-impeach as someone suggested. He's trying to control the narrative. He's trying to make people think, "If it's out in the open, it must not be wrong." If Democratic leadership doesn't pounce on that shit, Trump's attempt to control the narrative will be successful.
And Dems shouldn't just say that what he's saying and doing is wrong. Point out to the American public that what Trump is doing is a strategy, that he's trying to normalize his criminality, that he's trying to say, "If I'm open about collusion, then collusion is not a crime." Because as obvious as his strategy is to some, I guarantee you that most need to have it explained to them.
Simple, repetitive messaging and establishing the dominant narrative is something Republicans have long understood as incredibly important. Meanwhile, it's not been a strong suit of Democrats. That's just the reality.

(17,169 posts)Would never get any impeaching done if they ran in front of the cameras every time 45 said something untrue or stupid.

(10,721 posts)And a 5-minute press conference isn't asking a whole lot. Someone from leadership needed to immediately hold a press conference with the simple, easy-to-understand message that "Crimes committed out in the open are still crimes, and the president just committed an impeachable offense. Any questions?"
Lock him up.

(18,486 posts)What would the result of such a press conference be that isn't already occurring?

(10,721 posts)Trump is trying to get the public to accept the idea that if he's open about collusion then collusion isn't a crime. If Dems don't constantly beat that back, it will take hold in the public consciousness.
Messaging and narrative has long been something Republicans do much better than Democrats. And repetition works. If Dems think it's enough to just let Trump spout nonsense, that he'll bring himself down, they're wrong. Do not underestimate the gullibility and ignorance of the American people.

(18,486 posts)In fact, dropping everything to answer random questions from the press risks diluting and distracting from their targeted messaging.
They're doing exactly what they need to do, including putting out precise, targeted messaging. Running to the press podium every time Trump says or does anything illegal and/or impeachable will just play into his hands and won't get them one inch closer to our goal.
Garrett78
(10,721 posts)But for as long as I can remember the #1 complaint about Democrats has to do with messaging, and with good reason.
To impact the narrative, you have to establish the narrative and not let Republicans frame the debate.

(18,486 posts)We disagree that rushing to a podium to hold an impromptu press conference because Trump said something crazy is the only way to do it.

(10,721 posts)...goes right to the heart of the matter at hand. The very issue being investigated was on full display.
This wasn't Trump lying or bashing the media or serving McDonald's at the White House. This was monumental.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)Sounds like they didn't need Pelosi and Schiff wasting their time answering a lot of questions in a press conference for that message to take hold.

(18,486 posts)Are doing an excellent job with messaging. The entire media narrative is all about how Trump is engaging in illegal, unethical, unpatriotic, and impeachable behavior. I'm not sure how the messaging could be much more on point and consistent right now.
