1/ Trump just committed a felony violation of law by soliciting something of value in connection with a US election from a foreign govt on national TV. 52 U.S. Code § 30121. Violating the law isnt necessary for Impeachment but it certainly warrants it. https://law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/52/30121
2/ The statute requires knowledge your conduct is a crime. After the Mueller investigation, theres no way Trump was unaware this violates the law. Ukraine/China can you hear me is even worse than Russia, if thats possible, because it comes from a sitting president.
3/ Campaign finance crimes also require a thing of value be involved. But as FEC Chair
@EllenLWeintraub
recently said, you dont have to be able to assign a dollar amount. But, in the case of Ukraine, Trump did this. The help he sought was worth $400mil in US aid. Thats a felony

(23,337 posts)on Chuck Rosenbergs podcast The Oath. Excellent.
Her history is very interesting. I hadn't heard the details of her father-in-law's murder before. The "inside baseball" discussion between her and Chuck was fascinating, and they both do a good job of explaining legal terms and concepts for a lay audience.

(49,045 posts)Subverting policy for personal political or party political gain is Abuse of Power.
Which will get tRump first? Felony or Conviction in the Senate or Resignation?

(7,544 posts)Subverting the will of Congress. Reagan should have been impeached for this.

(28,127 posts)Btw, two of the three countries tRump has asked help from in trashing his political opponents are Communist countries: Russia and China.
Ironic since the GOP is so harshly trashing Democratic Socialists. But does not seem to mind tRump's friendly arrangements with Russia and Putin.

(28,127 posts)Repubs do not understand that.
Actually is there a single country living under true communism? "A communist society is characterized by common ownership of the means of production with free access to the articles of consumption and is classless and stateless, implying the end of the exploitation of labour." - Wiki
Neither China or NK qualifies either.
N Koreans are living under a brutal dictatorship.

(11,578 posts)They impeached President Clinton for cheating on his wife and lying about it, and in the process, gave our country endless outrage. Yet when Trump commits what is arguably treason, Republicans offer essentially silence. They are no better than Trump, swamp creatures one and all.

(4,533 posts)I think a court would rule that the value of an informed electorate prevents prosecution for soliciting information. I think the first amendment prevents prosecution for soliciting info from any source, foreign or not, valuable or not.
