WashingtonToday, Rep. Eliot L. Engel, the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Rep. Adam Schiff, the Chairman of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, the Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, released the following statement after committee staff received a briefing from the State Department Inspector General:
Today, the State Department Inspector General provided an unclassified briefing and documents to House and Senate Committees. The Inspector General believes this matter is urgent in light of the complaint filed by a whistleblower regarding the Presidents July 25, 2019, call in which he pressed the Ukrainian President to smear President Trumps domestic political rival.
The briefing and documents raise troubling questions about apparent efforts inside and outside the Trump Administration to target specific officials, including former Vice President Joe Bidens son and then-U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Masha Yovanovitch, who was abruptly removed as Ambassador in May after a sustained campaign against her by the Presidents agent, Rudy Giuliani.
The documents provided by the Inspector General included a package of disinformation, debunked conspiracy theories, and baseless allegations in an envelope marked White House and containing folders labeled Trump Hotel. These documents also reinforce concern that the President and his allies sought to use the machinery of the State Department to further the Presidents personal political interests.
The Inspector General stated that his office interviewed Secretary Pompeos Counselor, Thomas Ulrich Brechbuhl, who informed the Inspector General that Secretary Pompeo told him the packet came over, and that Brechbuhl presumed it was from the White House.
Earlier this week, Pompeo attempted to block Brechbuhl, Ambassador Yovanovitch, and other State Department employees from testifying before Congress.
These documents only underscore the need for the Trump Administration to comply with our requests for documents and interviews.

ETA - Rep. Jaime Raskin (MD) was at this briefing and made remarks about the substance and has appeared a few times now on MSNBC (including just getting done on Chris Hayes' show). He had brought one item to display to the media after the briefing (appeared to be a color photo-copy of the manila envelope with all the RW CT crap that the IG had found that Pompeo's office was purportedly distributing) -

(7,947 posts)But... I think it might be a cover so that they don't have to come out yet with a more serious issue in the State Dept, like (very likely-- we know this happened) Pompeo threatening to punish staffers who talk to Congress, or (what I suspect also happened) Pompeo tried to get deputies and embassy staffs, maybe ambassadors, to "come up with" (by hook or crook) dirt on Biden, and/or Clinton.
And there's always Russia. Ukraine is in constant conflict and under constant threat from Putin. What hurts Ukraine helps Putin.
The packet of disinfo is bad. What it might be covering is something worse.

(15,805 posts)Is Trump having his private hotel staff working on official govt business, or is he trying to hide things he doesn't want to become part of the required record keeping process as the law demands?
Maybe the WH ran out of standard office supplies and petty cash was low...

(1,850 posts)To paraphrase: "Hey, you want documents, and to question witnesses? Here's some (shit) information you can chew on!"
But Hillary's e-mails!
But Biden's son!
Putin is our friend! Ukraine is not, and deserves/needs to be taken over by Russia!
IG is a puppet being controlled by corrupt idiot childlike hoodlums!
They are all guilty of Contempt of Congress at the very least.
Really, this is not good. I'm disgusted. They are stonewalling, gaslighting, and misdirecting.
How do we fry their asses?

(1,850 posts)And the Dems determined it was a smear campaign.
Didn't realize he was sharing it as evidence of a smear campaign.
I feel a bit better now. Thanks.

Rudy Giuliani, Prescient Trump's personal attorney, said on Wednesday evening that some of the documents given to Congress by the State Department inspector general came from him.
Giuliani told CNN that he was responsible for some of the material in the roughly 40-page packet, which Democrats slammed as including "conspiracy theories" and "propaganda" about former Vice President Biden, his son Hunter Biden and former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.
They told me they were going to investigate it, Giuliani told CNN, adding that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called him after receiving the information. Giuliani added that he "routed" an "outline" of allegations to the State Department involving Biden and Yovanovitch, as well as notes from his own investigations with Ukraine's current and former top prosecutor.
Giuliani's comments come after the State Department inspector briefed committee staff, as well as Rep. Jamie Rasken (D-Md.), about the packet of information, which was received by the State Department in May.

(586 posts)I suppose we should be glad that they're so stupid!! Since Giuliani has now admitted to providing conspiracy theory crap in hopes of fixing the next election, that is very, very bad!! It's like when Nixon was talking about paying off the burglars!! You don't do that kind of stuff if you're obeying the law & supporting the constitution!!
at this rate, it will be a miracle if the impeachment vote isn't unanimous!!
if the GOP still tries to protect him now, the party will be in shambles if it's not already!!
