The Bronx Zoo says the woman who trespassed inside its lion enclosure on Saturday put herself in serious danger.
"This action was a serious violation and unlawful trespass that could have resulted in serious injury or death," a zoo spokesperson said of the woman who climbed over a visitor safety barrier at the African lion exhibit.
The woman can be seen dancing and waving her hands as if taunting the lion to move in a video from a bystander at the exhibit.
In the video, the woman does not appear scared or concerned even as the lion takes a few steps closer to her, and bystanders -- including young children -- could be heard talking in the background.
NYPD Detective Sophia Mason told CNN nobody called 911 and no arrests were made, and they were just notified Tuesday. They had no further information to provide.
It is unclear how the woman got over the barrier or how long she was there. Neither the woman nor the lion were injured in the incident.
"Barriers and rules are in place to keep both visitors, staff and animals safe. We have a zero tolerance policy on trespass and violation of barriers," the zoo said.

(22,369 posts)There were some misguided back-to-nature types living in the Alaskan wilderness, thinking they could commune with grizzly bears. I read the reason the bears stayed away is there knew there was something wrong with these people.
The people did eventually get killed by grizzly bears but only after many months.

I am a devotee of the Bronx Zoo via their excellent TV show on Animal Planet.
I am so glad this did not end badly, because if a lion had to be killed due to the actions of this idiot......
I am always, 100% on the side of animals when it comes to humans doing stupid or cruel shit.

(9,116 posts)Not every male has a pride. It's not like they're just hunkering down, waiting for some random lioness to come strutting by with a spare gazelle steak.
But if you want to get really pedantic, no captive lionmale or otherwisehunts.

(129,097 posts)...these zoos have done some major modifications after fiascos in various cities (Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, San Francisco), where there is a wide deep "moat" between where the public is and where the lion is that is not visible from the angle of the shot.
For example, people might recall that horrible incident at the San Francisco zoo about 12 years ago where that zoo (and others) went through upgrades of their facilities that hosted the large cats -
I know here in Philly, there is no "open air" pen with them. They are behind a HUGE fence (but then they created a fenced "tube" so they can go roaming around the zoo and people watch while people watch them).
