One year from Tuesday, Americans who fly will need to have a driver's license that meets new federal security requirements, or they'll have to produce another form of acceptable identification to get through airport checkpoints.
The Transportation Security Administration advised travelers not to wait until the last minute to obtain what's known as a Real ID, an enhanced version of a standard driver's license required by Congress in 2005, following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
They're now available in all but three states: Oregon, Oklahoma and New Jersey. All other states are compliant with the law, but air travelers should check with their state government's motor vehicle agency to find out where they can obtain the new license.
As of Oct. 1, 2020, fliers who do not have a Real ID or an acceptable alternative form of identification, will not be able to get past any domestic airport security checkpoint.

(40,168 posts)We were two years out, too. Get it done while it's fresh in your mind. AAA office in our area was the way to go.

(146,317 posts)which was one of the states that stalled and stalled on implementing it. My DL comes due next July. I could renew it early, but probably won't bother. My wife and I renewed our passports last year, though, and I've already begun using that document at airports, instead of my DL. The TSA thinks that's just fine, and I leave my DL in my wallet. The boarding pass goes into the passport where it opens to my photo, etc. Very streamlined in the security line.

The longest amount of time was dealing with the numbnuts DL employee who wanted to say I didnt have the right documentation lol
But I had brought two of just about everything, so he grudgingly did his job.
I still dont get the reason for it. If one has a passport, that should be all thats needed.

(146,317 posts)bills for a long time. So, Minnesota's way behind in this and is playing catch-up now. Trouble is that they've delayed and delayed and now they have new software for issuing DLs, and an entire state full of people who are going to need Real ID DLs within a year. So, it's currently taking a couple of months from the time you apply until you get your new license.
If your licence expires next year, you can't get your new one until next year, or the one you get will expire and you'll have to renew it. It's a Catch-22.
Last year, I suggested to my wife that we just renew our expired passports so we don't have to deal with the rush. So, that's what we did. Next year, I'll apply for the Real ID DL a couple of months before my licence expires and go through the process. But, I'll have my passport in hand in case I have to fly if there's a delay.

(51,308 posts)I know you have to fly fairly often, and sometimes with little notice - thats gotta be a pain.

(146,317 posts)I just planned for the situation. I keep it in my underwear drawer, right under my jockey shorts and right next to my watch, which I wear only when traveling. That way, when I pack, I'm sure to remember it.
There's a zippered pocket in my attache case that's exactly the right size for the passport. It also fits into the inside breast pocket of my travel blazer. It's really easy.

(51,308 posts)A friend of mine was wondering if the passport would suffice; shes up in arms about the Real ID for some reason lol...digging in her heels until the last moment.
Ill pass that info on. Thanks.

(146,317 posts)passports at the TSA security screenings. If anything, they speed up the process. Your boarding pass fits right in there on the photo page of the passport, so you just open it up. The TSA screener looks at it, marks your boarding pass, and hands it back to you. Then, you carry it in your hand, with the boarding pass as you go through the metal detector or scanner. Routine, and less awkward that holding a boarding pass and driver's licence, really.
A U.S. Passport is the best ID there is.

(4,661 posts)I assume that will suffice.
Oregon isnt offering real ID drivers licenses until July 2020, so its expected to be a madhouse in the few months until fall 2020 when they are required.
I have a passport so I will just wait until my license expires or Im within a year of my passport expiring.
