Just finished the "Strong Towns" book

Simultaneously infuriating and persuasive, but I highly recommend it. You can read most of the source material on the website, if you don't want to cough up $20 right now.

Our car-focused development patterns have led to towns all over the country having infrastructure maintenance requirements that they'll never, ever be able to actually meet. The tax base simply isn't there for it. The sad truth is that Detroit is the future of a lot of the US: we're going to need to find ways to wind down lots and lots of cul-de-sac neighborhoods.
