20 senators are needed to convict Trump and throw him out.
That's a lot and I'm not sure we'll ever get that many.
Of course there may be only one that needs persuading.
If Moscow Man thinks Trump will drag down the Repuglican votes in November, he would order the others to vote him out and in that case 20 would probably turn.
Alternatively if he thinks Trump remaining will help the votes it will probably be nearly impossible to get enough to kick out Trump.
So Mitch is the key to this whole mess.

(3,678 posts)I think there is about as much love for Trump in the U.S. Senate as there was for Caesar in the Roman Senate.
So long as he is useful to Senate Republicans, or so long as they are fearful of him, he will have their support.
When he becomes a liability to them, or becomes weakened and no longer seems a potential threat to them, then out come the knives, figuratively speaking.

(10,721 posts)And I agree with Elizabeth Drew (interviewed by Lawrence this evening) that Dems need to bring forth multiple articles of impeachment, even if that means the process takes longer than Pelosi and others might like. Force the Republicans (and Joe Manchin) in the US Senate to condone 3 or 4 or 5 different crimes.
I keep thinking that if Schiff and Co. can somehow get that server, it'll be game over for Trump.
Lock him up.

Maybe the FBI took months to sip through all the documents and they have found the holly grail like two weeks ago?

(25 posts)The Republicans don't really like the reputation that they're getting from Trump and would be perfectly happy with Pence. The decision won't happen in public. It will be behind closed doors. They will want to make sure that there is enough votes before they will risk his retaliation. If there is, they will be able find those 20 votes from senators that are planning to retire before their next reelection. (It doesn't have to be 2020.)
Lock him up.
(6,933 posts)If that's what happened (in addition to the Ukraine call...) he's toast.
No repug would want to vote for letting a Russian-mob money launderer in the WH.

(15,286 posts)Senators will dump Trump. On MSNBC last night, there were recent polls shown for AZ, CO and Maine where Trump's net approval was negative. IIRC, AZ was the low at -7 and Maine the high at -15. It's not just senators up for re-election in 2020 either, the ones up in 2022 have to be concerned, too. For ex, in PA, Trump's been underwater for awhile. Pat Toomey's up in 2022 and reportedly will face LtGov Fetterman. Toomey won't be able to stick with Trump or want to, imho.
During Watergate, the GOP was firmly behind Nixon, until they weren't at the end. Nixon resigned rather than face conviction in the Senate.
