Hear me out before you poo poo 💩 the idea.
What if the big money/power/Murdochs/etc. decide that Trump cant win in November 2020.
What if they decide to have the needed 20 GOP Senators vote for impeachment.
What if they get it done in time for someone like Kasich to get on enuf GOP primary ballots to get their nomination.
We know that Americans have very short memories and many might not blame the GOP for Trump.
The Never Trumper Republicans would all flock back to their party.
Someone like Kasich (who the media will hail as a pragmatic moderate uniter midwesterner from the bellwether state of Ohio) could make the race suddenly competitive.
Thats why I dont want the House to wrap this up by Thanksgiving.
Lets stretch it out until early 2020, after the primaries have already started.

(34,086 posts)For one, he went around the Republican legislators in Ohio to ensure that Ohio adopted the expanded Medicaid program. Since Trump wants to dismantle it - that's a significant difference.
He also vetoed the most extreme anti-abortion laws that the current governor has signed.
I certainly don't want him as president - but is is more moderate than Trump, and does not agree with everything Trump has done.
(I live in Ohio.)

(13,498 posts)for the GOP. I'm sure that's crossed Mitch's mind. But he has to throw raw meat to the Trumpy types, and jumping too fast will push them all away. So, while I think that could happen (and honestly it should happen if any republicans are honest about the criminality and disaster that the trump presidency has been!), I don't know if they can do it fast enough to make a real dent in the 2020 electoral process.

Kasich does not represent that
A lot of folks won't blame the new candidate for Trump - even though many of us around here feel the GOP enabled Trump

(3,503 posts)Actually Id find Haley even more worrisome than Kasich. I see her as the eventual first female President.
If Тяцмр does leave one way or the other, his base will revolt against the party. Theyll see Kasich as a RINO, they love all the ugliness Тяцмр brings to the table but theyll absolutely fawn over Haley. And so will many of the target voters we need to bring back into the fold.
I agree that we need to thread the timing needle.

That could work. Bad as it may be, though, it's still better than another Trump term.

(9,966 posts)... if the primary Republican voters got smart and nominated him, we'd be in big trouble. He would pick a moderate female VP and "save the country." Hopefully, the Deplorables won't let this happen!

(12,164 posts)His policies would be about as bad as Trump's, but he doesn't inspire the Deplorables.
If the electorate weren't so polarized, he might have a chance. But as several pollsters and political analysts have pointed out, there are very few actual swing voters any more.

(31,525 posts)would sit this one out if Trump isn't the nominee. That would be good for the Democratic nominee.
Secondly, if Trump is successfully removed from office, I want a Republican candidate who is not batshit crazy. Kasich may espouse a lot of right wing policies, but he is at least competent for the job if he were to win.
While I think any of the Democratic candidates would be preferable, I don't have a whole lot of confidence in our election security, since very little has been done to protect it. For that reason, I want the Republican nominee to be a capable person who will keep the best interests of our country in mind and can win back the trust of our allies.
That being said, we need to whip the socks off the Republicans at every level of government. We have our work cut out for us.

I think we win but I will readily admit that Biden/Harris would win by a bigger margin.
empedocles
(15,751 posts)Harris, and so articulate Bute.
However, pragmatically, feels sure that we need Biden to not only ensure against trump or a 'con, but also for down ticket support to get things done. I really liked the Obamas, [daughter worked for Michelle, good people], but, [this is politically incorrect on DU], Biden would have gotten much more done than Obama if elected in 2008. [No tea party racist fires, stronger in Congress and out there support].

(7,817 posts)holding public gop congressional support together with threats and blackmail to take down the party and its leadership...and that wears thin with each embarrassment and outrage.
I've always thought that one reason for gop silence must be that they have a plan to get through... they must have a Trump backup plan B and C that allows them to reasonably fight for the WH and senate while somehow rehabbing the gop (because dems will let them recover instead of kicking them while down). Can't know exactly what that is but we might find out soon. Does the gop really want to hear the LONG list of Trump/GOP misconduct over the next 13 months? Do they really want to say over and over that potus can't be investigated?

(2,153 posts)With the job of branding the guy they have now has done, we could probably run a warm 6-pack of lite beer against Kasich - or anybody else wearing the scarlet "R" - and win. Cover the basics of making sure we don't fall for the next round of Russian disinformation, and GOTV dammit, don't get cocky about it, I think that warm 6-pack is way more reliable and trustworthy

Also, stretching this out until primary season is underway takes attention away from our candidates.

(8,926 posts)limp across the finish line. If they try to replace him with another nominee the MAGAt base may revolt and not show up to vote. I think the GOP will see this possibility as too big a risk. They are better off to just keep ramping up the propaganda and try to stir up the MAGAts into a feeding frenzy. If they cave now they can only weaken themselves more than they already are.
