Trump offered Ukrainian president Justice Dept. help in an investigation of Biden, memo shows

Senior Justice Department officials said the director of national intelligence referred concerns about the call to the Justice Department in late August, after the intelligence community inspector general found that it was a possible violation of campaign finance laws. Days later, the inspector general referred the matter to the FBI.
Career prosecutors and officials in the Justice Departments criminal division reviewed the rough transcript, which they obtained voluntarily from the White House, and determined the facts could not make the appropriate basis for an investigation, a senior Justice Department official said Wednesday. The final decision was made by Brian Benczkowski, who leads the Justice Departments criminal division. As part of their reasoning, Justice Department lawyers determined that help with a government investigation could not be quantified as a thing of value under the law, officials said.
Their primary source for reaching that conclusion was the memo, according to the officials. While prosecutors did gather information about how the White House memorializes presidential calls with foreign heads of state, they did not interview other White House officials because they had not formally opened an investigation. Justice Department officials still do not know who the whistleblower is, officials said Wednesday.

(23,565 posts)there is no record at all of trump's discussions with putin.
I was hoping there was something more damning than him hiding conversations. We know he does that. I'm confused.

(23,565 posts)not worse than having no records on the putin conversations and destroying the interpreters notes.
I am not the brightest bulb. I could be missing something.
But, from what congresswoman Jackie Spier said to Rachel last night, it sounds like something much bigger than hiding information.

(4,402 posts)If Trump "destroyed" it, forensics can likely reconstruct it if they know where to look.
These people haven't mastered "reply all" and .pdfs. Do you really think they can irretrievably destroy evidence?
The scandal isn't that they are hiding information. It's what that information likely is.

(4,341 posts)I believe that can be construed as obstruction of justice because impedes any type of investigation.
My question about all this, the known fact that W. Barr has been corrupt from day one, has lied to Congress and the Citizens of the United State of America...Why is it that W. Barr is not being impeached as well? This guy is going to cause so much trouble during impeachment proceedings, I bet he will go as far as to threaten GOP members who may grow a spine and understand the seriousness of the accusations (I know a GOP with a spine is hard to imaging, but one can only hope) and thus take votes away from impeaching the creature. I think that, as imperative that it is to get rid of the creature, Pence, McConnell, Barr is of the utmost urgency, he needs to be in jail.

In June 2018, Politico reported that President Donald Trump frequently and routinely would tear up papers he received, resulting in government officials taping them together for archiving to ensure that Trump did not violate the Presidential Records Act.[6]
In July 2018, Business Insider reported that President Trump gave his personal cellphone number to various world leaders, having unrecorded conversations with them completely without U.S. officials' knowledge.[7]
In July 2018, CNN reported that The White House had suspended the practice of publishing public summaries of President Donald Trump's phone calls with world leaders, two sources with knowledge of the situation told CNN, bringing an end to a common exercise from the Republican and Democratic administrations.[8]

I'm just so happy I've lived long enough to see this sick administration's shenanigans come to a head. I just hope they don't leave any rock turned over. He needs to sit and watch all the facts come out and suffer the consequences.

(4,341 posts)And shouldn't they be liable for conspiracy to hide information? They have become accomplices in this act of treason by doing that.
Anyone who thinks that "conspiracies" can only happen when there are only a few people involved is not looking at this picture and also believed the accounts of 9/11 provided by the "9/11 Commission". In this administration we can see that a lot of people are involved, maybe many are doing the dirty work for fear of loosing their jobs, and I have many questions about that, no job is more important than your country, and many others because they "believe in the agenda", but nonetheless they are all complicit and should suffer the consequences.
