in your example, both courses of action have the same outcome. Only in the first situation, you've expended a lot of effort for that outcome, and it may detract from your next trip to the plate, keeping with your baseball analogy.

But if you don't swing, the crowd doesn't yet know what you might be capable of on the next at-bat.

And the opposing team feels really good about having struck you out. If they're not terribly sportsmanlike about it, they will razz you and your team.

The batter in the example becomes "a batter who strikes out." It's probably not good for the batter psychologically either on his next at-bat because he's remembering that he just struck out last time.

Disclosure: I don't actually know what I'm talking about, since this analogy involves baseball.
