A.G. Barr Accused of Covering Up Whistleblower Complaint about Trump

The U.S. House Intelligence Committee chairman on Thursday accused the Justice Department of blocking intelligence officials from giving Congress a whistleblower complaint reported to involve communications between President Donald Trump and a foreign leader.
<snip>

Another Democratic member of the committee, Mike Quigley, was more direct, charging that Attorney General William Barr was seeking to protect the president.

“Mr. Barr and the Department of Justice’s job in their mind is to protect the president,” he told reporters. “And it doesn’t matter if that violates the laws.” - PoliticusUSA

in the position of having to defend not removing someone who has BROKEN THE LAW. This isn't over lying about a private sex act. Good god, folks, we aren't wanting to remove these people over partisan nonsense, they are BREAKING THE LAW. If the house passes articles of impeachment, they will state he violated the law, not lied to investigators. The Senate does not want to be put in that position. Its electoral disaster.

cheering while Barr breaks the law. It might be, but it also might be for us where we are defending closely contested seats if it motivates their base more than ours. I don't think we really know how it will impact the election. I have to think if we had a clear indication from the plurality of would be voters that impeachment would cause them to flock to us in 2020 we would do so. But I don't readily see that. What I do see is national polling that says all of our top candidates would beat Trump if the election were to take place today, so perhaps Pelosi doesn't want to do anything seismic at this time while our candidates are enjoying that advantage. It appears to me she is playing the long game. Impeachment, or not, won't stop the law breaking by Barr as long as McConnell is enabling him. It may be the noble thing to do, the "right" thing perhaps. But if it were to cause us to lose the election and get another 4 more years of Trump, that would be a disaster.

Cabinet, agency heads and more is far more serious in violating the right of Congress (yes both housed even though we only have one) to investigate any and all presidential, WH staff, Cabinet, agency and even military staff. They will lose in the end to the Supreme Courts striking down of this widespread and blatant acts, we hope well before the election. But, even when we get the right-leaning SC's approval, who says that Trump will abide by their decision?

And, as we have all observed now, Trump will not abide by any decision that goes against him as long as he has his lackey AG to block it. And, the only way I see out of this is by voting them out in 2020. So I think we should be very careful about doing anything that might backfire and tip the electorate back toward Republicans.

I don't want to lose this war.

So far, impeachment inquiry has resulted in one article of impeachment. Extracting evidence from another hostile branch looks like a long, hard fight.

We'll see how much House Judiciary and Intel can get with a formal Impeachment Inquiry.

If there really are structural blocks to congressional oversight enforcement -- with emphasis on enforcement -- Democrats will be the only ones to change those structural blocks used for misprision.

What's behind my comment isn't about Quigley. We can file articles of impeachment, so let's do it.

We can talk impeachment all we want here, but where I'm coming from concerns blocks to productive impeachment enforcement.

We have lived too long with the niceties of past presidential deference to conventions and practices. In fact, post-Nixon was the time to enact many a law with severe penalties for recalcitrant presidents who circumvented the courts, the law and Congressional subpoenas.

Woe to us for not doing so long ago!

He apparently encouraged GHWB to pardon the Iran-contra folk who otherwise looked like they might help convict him

And, of course, he was auditioning in June 2108 for his current role as AG with his little brief on Mueller and obstruction

So maybe nobody's really too surprised if Barr's still acting like Trump's consigliere now
