Ben Carson reportedly referred to transgender people as big, hairy men during an internal meeting with White House staff.
According to the Washington Post, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development made those remarks while discussing access to womens homeless shelters. Three unnamed sources claimed he was worried about transgender people trying to infiltrate these facilities, calling to mind the widely debunked trans predator myth.
Insiders do not say, however, if he alleged that trans women abuse others when they gain access to womens spaces. (Note: They dont.)
The report, which was published Thursday, also claimed that Carson also lamented that society no longer seemed to know the difference between men and women during a Wednesday visit with HUDs San Francisco office.
According to the Post, staffers were shocked and upset by Carsons comments, which resulted in at least one woman [walking out] in protest.
A spokesperson for HUD immediately denied the reports, while also using incorrect terminology to refer to the trans community. The Secretary does not use derogatory language to refer to transgendered [sic] individuals, a member of the agencys senior staff told the Post. Any reporting to the contrary is false.
However, Carson has a noted history of using derogatory language to target trans and gender nonconforming people. The former Johns Hopkins surgeon has claimed that transitioning is akin to changing ones ethnicity, suggested that trans people should have segregated bathrooms, and said that being transgender is abnormal and the height of absurdity.
Since joining the White House, Carson has rolled back protections guaranteeing trans people access to homeless shelters on the basis of their gender identity. He has also cut funding allotted to low-income housing for individuals living with HIV and discontinued surveys on LGBTQ+ homelessness.

(12,712 posts)Carson DOES NOT BELONG at HUD at all. He is the antithesis to what we need for that agency and just another plant by Trump. We have a nationwide housing crises and there is a soggy clown who is in way, way over his sleepy head.
As we have noticed, the people who have been chosen for various agencies either have something against that agency and its agendas or are incompetent in holding the position, or both.
I recommend, again, that he do some brain surgery on himself to see if he can fix what ever is obviously wrong with him and step down from the position ASAP. And no, his license exam of using the little tweezers successfully in the game Operation is not acceptable accreditation.

(4,393 posts)international, societies have collectively lost their minds. Here at home, it's fear, fear, fear that drives the GOP agenda to try to legislate ALL fear away from awareness for an agenda of non-accountability and non-introspection of the the 1% and wanna-bes - we lose awareness at the price of our humanity, our thoughts, and behaviors that might be thought of as collectively kind, just, and peace-ful and depend in error upon individual rights to do as one pleases when those rights harm no large groups of others, then, foregoing holding those unaccountable for discrimination, lawlessness, and tyrannical corruption of what should protect each person's safety and resources, environmental and financial.
THERE OUGHT TO BE A LAW?
Well, there is such a document from whence flow all others, though its flexibility allows for both criminal and civil laws of consequence, when individuals are out of control (including those pinnacles of corruptible mind and justice on SCOTUS), and no longer promote the greater good, else face a collective judgment (Thanks, advanced technology) of total annihilation.
"Murder on 5th Avenue and every other crime on the books without consequence = I AM BECOME DEATH" to me!
