Man gets 1 year in federal prison for $4 million tax evasion
After pleading guilty to evading an almost 20 year old income tax debt, 63-year-old Longwood man Michael Murray was sentenced to one year in federal prison and will have to repay a hefty $4.3 million tab.
In 2001, Murray was taxed $889,520 for money he made in 1993. The IRS issued levies on his income and placed liens on his properties in Florida and Tennessee in an attempt to collect the money but Murray continued to evade collection
Murray placed money and property under other names and submitted documents with false information to the IRS. After 10 years of evasion, his bill quadrupled because of interest and penalties.
"Tax evasion is not a victimless crime," said James D. Robnett, IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge for the Tampa Field Office in an official statement.
