Concerns for 2182: Asteroid fears: NASA warning over 'most dangerous space rock' heading to Earth

As if we're not leaving enough grief for our future generations...

The interesting issue however - due to the orbital dynamics - is that any remediation efforts will need to be performed around 2120. There should be some testing of political will going on around that time.

Good luck future people !

According to a study by scientist Maria Eugenia Sansaturio the 1999 asteroid may or may not impact the Earth.”

Dr Sansaturio warned in a report for the Solar System journal Icarus that there is a good chance of the asteroid striking.

She told Universe Today in 2010: “The total impact probability of asteroid 1999 RQ36 can be estimated as 0.00092, approximately one-in-a-thousand chance, but what is most surprising is that over half of this chance (0.00054) corresponds to 2182.”

There is a fair amount of orbital uncertainty, due to the gravitational influences on the asteroid when it passes by the Earth and other objects.

That's an optimistic view, all things considered. Futurists ho!

Future generations, huh? I don't know about the odds of that, and those that MIGHT make it will have be either living a rather primitive existence in the dregs or they will be the offspring of some transhuman miracle. It's a tossup. Oh, and maybe it will just be the AI of the singularity as a unitary consciousness that will take care of it better than the extinct humans did?

Will the Morlocks be above ground at that point and will they have the technology to remediate? Or is this going to mess up the evolution of cockroaches into a sentient species that can withstand a different environment in millions of years and recreate civilization? That adds a new meaning to roach motel.

then they’ll wait till it’s too late. Besides, it may be striking a planet devoid of humans on that date, not that I’m cynical or anything.
