WASHINGTON – A new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll shows that about half of Americans disapprove of the way President Donald Trump handled recent mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas ..

Only 36% of Americans polled approved of Trump's handling of the shootings, and 12% responded that they were unsure. The survey of 1,000 adults was conducted by phone from August 10-14 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

Trump had faced .. criticism .. for not offering more specifics on actions or policies he would use to address mass shootings, or repudiating his own rhetoric that many critics of the president saw as linked to the attacks ...

... the NRA said two weeks ago that Trump told longtime NRA chief Wayne LaPierre that universal background checks for potential gun purchasers are off the table.

"I spoke to the President today. We discussed the best ways to prevent these types of tragedies," LaPierre wrote on the NRA's Twitter account, adding Trump was a strong supporter of the Second Amendment.

While Trump confirmed to reporters the next day that he discussed background checks with LaPierre, he disputed published reports that he told LaPierre that background checks were indeed off the table, as he continues to seek other gun measures.

Trump said, "We already have very, very strong background checks" ...

Americans across party and demographic lines overwhelmingly support expanded background checks for gun buyers and allowing law enforcement to temporarily seize weapons from troubled individuals, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll, as President Trump and Republicans face fresh pressure to act.

Although the poll finds a continued partisan divide on more far-reaching gun-control proposals, public opinion is firmly behind Democrats’ push for action as Congress returns to Washington on Monday. More Americans say they trust congressional Democrats over Trump to handle the nation’s gun laws, 51 percent to 36 percent, with independents siding with Democrats by a 17-point margin — a divide that could have political ramifications for the 2020 presidential and congressional elections ...

Mon Sep 9, 2019, 12:26 PM

S. E. Cupp 22 hrs ago

After the Gilroy shooting, he offered, "While families were spending time together at a local festival, a wicked murderer opened fire and killed three innocent citizens, including a young child." After El Paso and Dayton, he promised to consider meaningful background checks, insisting, "There's a big package of things that's going to be put before (Congress), by a lot of different people."

Since then, he's hedged on exactly what new legislation he'll consider, and said on Sunday that the Odessa shooting "really hasn't changed anything." He again lowered expectations for the expanded background checks he'd earlier touted, telling reporters, "For the most part, as strong as you make your background checks, they would not have stopped any of it" ...

... the president's behavior and words over the past weeks have shown just how uninterested he actually is in using his bully pulpit to pressure Congress to do anything, instead remaining breathtakingly vague and non-committal ...

The draw of Trump for so many voters was that he was a "problem solver." To the contrary, he is a problem avoider and in many cases a problem exacerbator. He's far more interested in looking strong than in fixing things.

Dear Constituent ...

Let’s not be like Walmart, which decided Tuesday to stop selling handguns and some ammunition and to stop letting customers openly carry firearms in its stores ...

And let’s not rush to judgment about so-called assault weapons, just because the AR-15 or a model similar to it was used in the slaughters in West Texas, Parkland, Las Vegas, Orlando, Pittsburgh, Sandy Hook and San Bernardino, among others ...

... We’re working very hard on all the possibilities. You can count on us.

Sincerely,

Your Republican U.S. senator

... What if there was a mass shooting in the United States not once or twice or four or six times monthly, but every single day, a big one, the kind that electrifies social media and squats for days on Page 1 — would that be enough to move Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell from his insistent inertia on gun safety? Thirty-eight people were slain in three such shootings in August — in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, as well as West Texas — and still Senate Republicans and President Trump refuse to act ...

... These slaughters of innocent people are part of an all-out assault on our society that has been stoked by President Donald Trump and his reckless rhetoric that is driving white supremacists and neo-fascists to take up arms against immigrants, people of color, Jews, the LGBTQ community and others that they mistakenly blame for their problems ...

There have always been bullies and racists in America. But today, those bullies are emboldened by President Trump and his racist language. In El Paso, the shooter virtually quoted President Trump. Right here in Gilroy, the murderer posted on the internet that he was inspired by a fascist screed that promoted racial hatred and anti-Semitic views.

Make no mistake: this was no coincidence or accident. Instead of hunting big game, these killers were out hunting “Mexicans” — people of color. They were hunting our children and families. They have dehumanized us. Sadly, our children must be hyper vigilant when they leave the house. Going to school, church or mall is no longer business as usual.

And now thanks to the National Rifle Association (NRA), these hunters are not armed with shotguns, they are armed with assault rifles — the weapons of war ...

Mon Sep 9, 2019, 12:46 PM

Chronicle Editorial Board
Updated: Aug. 24, 2019 10:32 a.m.

Amid ever more baroque expressions of gun violence, the Republican Party’s absolutist position on firearms almost became too absurd for the president who offered to buy Greenland.

Having broken record after record and infiltrated every corner of American life — from schools and offices to places of recreation and worship — mass shootings took on another measure of urgency this summer: frequency. The teenager who used a military-style rifle to kill two children and a young man while injuring a dozen others at the Gilroy Garlic Festival last month did so the same weekend that mass shootings in New York and Philadelphia went widely unnoticed. A week later, similar weapons were used to kill nine in a historic district of Dayton, Ohio, and 22 at an El Paso, Texas, Walmart, all in less than 24 hours.

Even a master of the ridiculous and disingenuous could not insist on unfettered gun access in the wake of such American carnage. In an all-too-brief fit of reason, President Trump reacted as a responsible leader might: He promised to address the problem ...

A day later, he stopped gunning and started running, telling a New Hampshire rally of “a mental illness problem that has to be dealt with. It’s not the gun that pulls the trigger” ...

Cops are the ones facing the AKs with endless ammunition and the nuts and criminals who bought them at gun shows. If Trump had to face someone pointing a weapon in his direction he'd shit his pants and cover his eyes with his tiny hands. But blah, blah, blah, hand out a few medals and do nothing. As long as there's a TV camera in the room the Orange Ego is happy.
