(12,712 posts)There have been "leaders" who obviously did not deserve their position or the loyalty of their subordinates. In fact, they were obviously damaging and dangerous in a very general sense.
It is up to a good military leader to be able to know the difference between a good leader and a malignant threat and make a judgement call, or else, that is not true leadership and represents kowtowing and enabling, even after the fact, as Mattis seems to be doing.
Quitting was not a sufficient statement, clearly. One would assume that getting out Trump's mess would be a sane and rational thing to do, but that could be perceived as merely self-protection and a career saving motivation.

(35,454 posts)quite a disappointment. Another purist who puts an institution before country, though he did manage to get a couple of complaints about Obama in and talk about the mistake Obama made by trying to withdraw troops from Iraq. (his words, not mine)

(6,699 posts)Watching him dodge questions from the CNN interview pissed me off to no end. This coward hides behind some false oath to refuse to acknowledge the nightmare that dwells in our White House and disgraces our country for four painful and humiliating years. A true coward.
He might have been an accomplished soldier, but he's a toothless coward out of uniform. Fuck him and all his enabling coward cult.

I was infantry in Vietnam in 1969. I have been part of that thinking. War will do that to humans. Pawns for the bankers, the military complex and the politicians.

(257 posts)Frankly we haven't heard what he said in words to TЯump...and neither did the pRez (wouldn't understand them anyway)
I trust Mattis...(which is different than saying I agree with all of his views)

(6,699 posts)But I think he is just another enabler to this monster that lurks in the White House. I understand one can say he was the steady hand to keep him from dumping the whole nation into the toilet. But he also plays the "ethical secret keeper" to protect this piece of shit that is endangering the whole world. I find that less than honorable. I find that cowardly and giving permission for this madman to continue threatening the world. Did he sign a "nondisclosure agreement" with the madman? I seriously doubt it, but perhaps.
After watching the interview, I lost all respect for the coward. He may have been an admirable military general, but that doesn't give him a pass for his cowardice today.
Me.
(35,454 posts)as well as throwing shade on Biden, but hey, he stays out of politics.
Selective loyalty. Coward, and enabling cult member.

(1,634 posts)Thankful for his service but Mattis believes in not criticising a sitting President.
He knows his "former" boss is a clear and present danger. Mattis no longer wears the uniform.
Who is he protecting by not speaking up?
