(102,408 posts)killer, but we DO need to know the truth--who, why, and HOW?
Seriously, think of the consequences and how readily those in power can manipulate public perception, if we never identify WHO was behind these incidents?

(7,947 posts)For one thing, while I'm sure they're certain he did all the killings, they're going to have to make sure, and there are 5 people dead and the case has to be dealt with. The injured need to know whose estate to sue, and so on. There will have to be a death certificate filed...
But what would be the reason anyway? Not to give him notoreity? They're sure getting delicate about that.
The police and media were quick to identify Simone Biles's brother as a murderer, when she-- a completely innocent person-- is now being made notorious for something she didn't do... and he's almost always identified first as her brother.

(20,741 posts)ever happen? This is a free country, and with easy communications, there's always someone who knows the name and someone who will tell.
I wonder if someone in the throes of fury and frustration can really put it together that "well, there's no point, since they won't publish my name."
I think the availability of assault rifles will always be the problem and that the solution will always be restrictions, which many americans won't tolerate.
And around we go.
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,209 posts)Once the name is released the people around him will start putting together all the red flags, and that might in turn help others recognize behaviors of potential shooters elsewhere.

Those who approve of NEVER releasing such names need to really think of the consequences. How readily will we be manipulated to believe whatever whoever in power wants us to believe on these gun incidents if we can never see for ourselves?!

(7,947 posts)And the shooter's neighbors and co-workers.
It won't last, of course-- someone won't show up for work, and it'll come out.
i do wonder if this is another El Paso guy who drove from another state, or a local.
But there's no legal right to withhold the name of a criminal, and there are all sorts of official forms (death certificate).

I always read the reports on mass shooters. I want to know about their childhood, relationship with their parents and siblings, how they did in school, what groups they belonged to, social media, their medical and psych reports, what medications they were on, what the medical examiner found, toxicology.
Somebody said "Mass shootings have similarities, but each mass shooting is different in an important way."

He is Traitor Trump's next nominee for Supreme Court justice. (alive or dead, Traitor Trump doesn't really care) You can't ruin his career over this. He deserves a fair and impartial hearing as a possible judge and supreme.

(14,496 posts)when a black kid or adult commits a shooting, the name and race seems to appear within a few hours of the shooting.
For example, the kid that did the shooting in Mobile on Saturday had his name in the papers that same night.
Same with the guy that recently shot up a city neighborhood in Philadelphia. Name published same day.
Am I over-analyzing or does this practice just depend on location?.......
+++++++++++
BTW, just saw that the death toll has risen to seven in the Odessa shooting......

I suspect the more of this there is, the more the families from who the shooter was NOT will increase pressure to reveal the name so that theirs is no longer included in the speculation.

(30,677 posts)Texas, with their new gun party laws should hang their heads in shame. I know what a tough spot Texas is in with the lame-ass legislature it has, so I am so sorry for you guys. It seems hopeless

(7,671 posts)in most of the urban areas are some great people. It is rural Texas that dictates this ignorance. I know I live about 50 miles from Austin and it is remarkable the mentality compared to the Austin area. I love the privacy and beauty of nature but it does come at a cost in Texas.

(28 posts)is celebrity. They want their names to be known worldwide and remembered throughout history--kind of like Klebold and Harris.
Since Columbine, a serious effort has been made NOT to give them what they want. Think back to April. In all the reporting I saw on the 20th anniversary of Columbine, not even once did I hear either of the shooters' names mentioned.
Of all the recent shooters (waaaay too many) how many of the names can anyone think of right off the tops of our heads? Not many, if any. Who was the shooter at that Texas church? Or at the school in Santa Fe?
There was a mass shooting in Canada a few years back, and IIRC, the shooter's name was NEVER released.
That kind of anonymity may not stop other mass shootings, but it will certainly disincentivize those who want fame or infamy.

I think you just bide your time. Somebody is going to put two and two together based on, say, pictures of the vehicle that was pulled over, and a gun-happy neighbor who disappeared at the same time.

(19,140 posts)If hes white people talk about downplaying who he is. If he were black or Muslim zero media would be talking about keeping his name a secret.
Give me a break, put his name out there, hes dead, we deserve the right to know why he may have killed and who radicalized him.
fescuerescue
(4,448 posts)Might be worth considering.
I can't agree with keeping it a secret. But I also believe that these people, at least many of them seek fame.
The reality is, that the public doesn't care about a shooting 60 days after the event. That's the a harsh truth. In fact we've just moved on to the whatever is the latest shooting.
A delay would allow the public to be informed and to prevent coverups, but by the time that 60 days goes by, the shooter is now playing to a small audience and not the entire world.
