A stupid, but serious question :

All that talk last night about what "we" deserve.

Why do we "deserve" anything???

Where are they getting that notion?

What makes people in this country any MORE deserving than the people of Somalia.... or Bosnia... or Haiti.... or Greece.... or Egypt? or......._________?

The gross sense of 'entitlement' that has taken over this nation is ugly and wrong imo. We don't 'deserve' anything. We are fortunate to live in a region which is rich in natural resources. We enjoy many benefits that are 'ours' not because we ourselves have 'done' anything to merit them, but by dumb luck- chance- fate.

This kind of mind-set is what makes struggling and suffering through trials and sorrow even more difficult , because of the flawed and destructive notion that if you are 'good' enough, your life will be easy. Some really damn fine people live lives that are not easy, outwardly successful or enviable. Those living on the margins of this entitled society are often the most creative, compassionate and trustworthy citizens to be found.

anyone else bothered by this mantra?

Your thoughts?

I agree with you, but I think 'we' only included the top 1% of this country. R&R don't give a damn sinkingfeeling Aug 2012 #1

about anybody else no matter where they reside.

It's like when I see 'God Bless America' stuck on everything. Why should 'God' (if there were one) bless this country? We have caused so much death. destruction, and misery in our quest to be 'number one'. We, as a nation, have consistently violated the Ten Commandments, so why should we be blessed to the exclusion of every other country in the world?

by the speakers to believe that we are somehow "entitled" or "deserving" or supposed to expect good things, and NOT a challenge to all of us individually to actually work together and be involved with our common situation really disturbs me.

There was no call for us to be involved, or to join together- THAT is what made the 2008 election so different- That is what makes being a Democrat different....

"Ask not what your country can do for you"

" Yes WE Can"

“What do I owe to my times, to my country, to my neighbors, to my friends? Such are the questions which a virtuous man ought often to ask himself

"WE are the people we've been waiting for"

“Now the trumpet summons us again -- not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need -- not as a call to battle, though embattled we are -- but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle year in and year out, "rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation" -- a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty and war itself.”

" We are citizens of the world. The tragedy of our times is that we do not know this."

"We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future."

We don't deserve anything.

Yes, we work hard and we are good people and all that claptrap, but we don't deserve any more than people of any other ethnicity.

it struck me as such a stupid and unproductive thing to say.

Pandering to the sense of entitlement. While the GOP talks about eliminating "entitlements".
