trump militarizes space

Trump launches Space Command

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump announced Thursday the official establishment of the US military's Space Command.

"Those who wish to harm the United States, to seek to challenge us on the ultimate high ground of space, it's going to be a whole different ballgame," Trump said at a White House ceremony marking the command's establishment.

Space Command will become the 11th combatant command, joining the ranks of US Central Command, which oversees operations in the Middle East, and US Special Operations Command, which oversees Special Operations Forces.

The command will initially consist of just 287 personnel and its final location has yet to be determined. Its responsibilities will be transferred primarily from US Strategic Command.

The Outer Space Treaty only bans the placement of nuclear weapons. All other military activities and weapons are allowed. Hence why there are so many military satellites in space. As well as anti satellite weapons and why we, and probably other countries, looked or continue to look into kinetic bombardment. Any remember the Rods from God idea that popped up during GWB's first term?

And space was militarized a few years ago.

It was inconvenient to discuss how China and Russia did it when they were our friends, partners, and in no way our foes--and the very idea of Russia or China being our foes was, well, a horribly RW idea brimming over with American exceptionalism.

That's gonna' cost us. You already have made a huge bill for future generations to pay, General Space Cadet Skidmarks!

Speaking of cost, we already spend way too much on our military, (compared to other countries if you look at the charts) and divert funds from social needs and the public good for it.

What's the tab gonna' be? How much money will we throw into weaponizing space? How is the World going react to that?

The "Space Race" was a proxy war with the Soviet Union that ended in their defeat by the US reaching the moon first. Then, the two sides agreed to cooperate, and have nominally been doing so ever since.

Spy satellites ensure that treaties are being honored.
