My grandmother was born in and lived in Poland, but the ship's manifest for her journey to the U.S. states she came from Russia since it was occupied territory at that time - 1912. She came through Ellis Island as a young girl and her name is on the wall there. She sent what she could back to her family in Poland her entire life, but she never saw her family again - and she lived to 82. I'm guessing she was chosen to make the journey since she was the eldest child in the family. She had a twin sister, but that child died at age 7. She had to have been awfully brave to make that trip.

Her town in Poland was under Russian occupation when she made her journey - in 1912. My grandfather also was an immigrant from Poland. He came as an 18 year old, also in 1912. When WWI began, they made him a citizen and sent him to France to fight for this country - and he was proud to do it.
