Retired admiral jumps into Iowa Senate race against Joni Ernst with blistering message for Trumps enablers

Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and her fellow Republicans should be terrified of losing her seat in 2020 now that retired Vice Admiral Michael Franken has entered the race as a Democratic challenger.
Ernst is already facing an uphill battle in 2020 to keep her Senate seat as she faces angry voters at home for refusing to pass gun control measures aimed at preventing mass shootings in the wake of 22 people being murdered by a white nationalist in El Paso earlier this month.
And much of that refusal has to do with Ernst and her Republican colleagues not wanting to stand up to President Donald Trump and the NRA, which is something else voters have hammered Ernst for in recent months.
Long story short, Democrats are smelling blood in the water, which is why several have stepped up to challenge the incumbent Republican. And now Democrats have a high-ranking candidate in the field to take on the former Iowa Army National Guard Lt. Colonel.
Hailing from the most conservative part of the state, Franken served in the United States Navy for decades, attaining the rank of Vice Admiral during a distinguished career in which he had no fear voicing his opposition to the Iraq War, something he proudly mentions in a video announcing his candidacy.

The move drew rebukes from the Sunrise Movement and other activists who say the party leadership is ignoring young voters' priorities.

(3,823 posts)It sounded to me like a call for DC Democrats to be bolder in confronting climate change deniers and big pharma. I think it was a smart way to call for bolder action on Democratic issues in a way that comes across as perhaps moderate or even, dare I say, conservative. Can you imagine some Republicans saying Ill vote for him because hell stand up to those damn DC Democrats!

The candidate is right.
I am a lifelong Democrat who has never voted Republican, but our party seems to think that we're going to save the world with a bunch of wind turbines, solar cells and electric cars.
Guess what?
Much of the world has already endorsed this "plan" if you can call it that. More than two trillion dollars has been expended on solar and wind in the last ten years alone.
What is the result?
We hit 415 ppm of CO2 in the planetary atmosphere this spring. In the 20th century the average rate of increase in the dangerous fossil fuel waste was as follows:
1961-1970: 0.898 ppm/year on average.
1971-1980: 1.339 ppm/year on average.
1981-1990: 1.554 ppm/year on average.
1991-2000: 1.541 ppm/year on average.
In the age of the rise of "renewable energy will save us" beginning with Germany:
2001-2010: 2.038 ppm/year on average.
2011-2018: 2.418 ppm/year on average.
The 20th century average annual increase overall: 1.31 ppm/year
The 21st century average annual increase overall: 2.12 ppm/year
The last 5 years annual average increase: 2.55 ppm/year
Are we tired of so much winning yet? Do we care a shred for the planet we are leaving behind for our children, our grandchildren and their great grandchildren?
To find out about the acceleration of the rate of decay of the atmosphere, the following graphic from the NOAA Mauna Loa Carbon Dioxide Observatory says it all:
The absolute numbers can be discerned by calculating from data on the Mauna Loa website's data pages:
CO2 Observatory Data Pages
Let's be clear on something, OK? Prattling on about wind and solar and what we call "The Green New Deal" is not going to work.
So called "renewable energy" hasn't worked; it isn't working; and it won't work.
I'm intrigued by what the candidate has said, and hope he's focused on what will work.

(421 posts)We need to dramatically transform every sector of our economy away from carbon rich fuel sources. If that hurts billionaire oil/gas moguls and Drumpf donors and all the rest of the libertarian Koch suckers... so be it. The workers can retool and rebuild the much needed infrastructures of the future.

Lamb's wife died last year after battling multiple sclerosis for nearly three decades.
In June, massive flooding filled his basement with water and sewage, destroying his Fourmile Creek home of 40 years.
Now thieves have taken some of the family's few undamaged possessions, including a widescreen TV and his late wife's collectible Cabbage Patch dolls.
"Im just tired," said the 62-year-old retiree, who plans to take the city's $144,000 buyout of his home and head West. "I want to get this over with and get away from people."
Experts call Lamb and about 80 other homeless Des Moines residents "climate refugees" people displaced by a catastrophic weather disaster.
Iowa is likely to see more: The state has gotten warmer over the past 30 years, and scientists expect the years ahead will get even hotter, a shift that's likely to hit cities with more frequent and intense rainstorms, similar to the torrential rains that ravaged parts of the Des Moines metro in late June.

(40,212 posts)Joni introduced herself with a hokey commercial in a barn talking about her "farm girl" upbringing and castrated pigs. She is a big phony. And she is dumb.
Here is her recent comment on Climate Change: "I haven't seen proven proof."
Retired Vice Admiral Franken seems to be the opposite of Ernst and that can only be a good thing.
