Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham says he is open to putting Barack Obama under oath as he probes potential White House involvement in opening an investigation into unproven ties between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia.
Graham says one of the biggest remaining mysteries in the Trump-Russia saga that needs to be unraveled is who told President Obama about the counterintelligence investigation into then-candidate Donald Trump. The South Carolina Republican wants answers from the former president.
As part of his probe, Graham is prepared to call former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, former FBI Director James Comey, former CIA Director John Brennan, and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper to testify.
Graham joined Sean Hannity on Fox News on Wednesday night to say he was determined to get to the bottom of the launching of the Trump-Russia investigation, and that the bottom line for him was figuring out what Obama knew, when he knew it, and whom he learned it from.

Please proceed Lindsey. You might asked your fellow South Carolinian Trey Gowdy how the gotcha game worked out for him.

(24,412 posts)It would be unprecedented (wouldn't it?) to call a former President of the United States to testify in Congress?

(1,660 posts)1. Graham should know there isn't anything there, so the only reason he'd put Obama under oath would be to embarrass him and energize the base with a "gotcha" quote or two.
2. Breaking this precedent also leaves one Mr. Trump open for questioning once he leaves office--assuming he doesn't immediately leave the country the day his successor is sworn in.

(30,674 posts)and made them fight for his testimony like GOP does to us?
It would not happen of course, because Obama is not a dick. It would amuse me, though.
Also, Obama would bury Trump once that true story is forced out of him.

(33,643 posts)For a whole host of good reasons.
#1 is he knows Lindsey ain't gonna DO ... shit about it.
#2 is that if Lindsey DOES do shit, and somehow wins and forces Obama onto the stand? That means a precedent is set, which means as soon as Trump is out of office, Congress can force TRUMP onto the stand to account for all his bullshit.
Not only that, but he knows Obama will lay them to waste when DOES get on the stand. So, back to #1 ... Lindsey ain't gonna do shit if Obama declines.
Obama absolutely should decline and state executive privilege IMHO.

(24,412 posts)There was plenty of rationale for opening the Trump-Russia Investigation. Republicans once again are being obsessive and chasing their tails on insignificant details (Steele Dossier) that actually didn't have anything to do with anything.

(50,557 posts)Lindsay has a HUGE problem: he does NOT want emerging in an open Senate inquisition that the reason the NSA got wind of the Trump Tower server was that it was talking to a Russian bank server in the middle of a presidential campaign.
