El Paso shooter bought weapon from Romania, ammo from Russia

The 21-year-old gunman accused of killing 22 people in a shooting rampage at an El Paso Walmart has told law enforcement that he bought his AK-47 style weapon online from Romania and 1,000 rounds of ammunition from Russia, according to the Texas Tribune.

Citing a Texas Department of Public Safety report, the Tribune said Patrick Crusius, who has confessed to the Aug. 3 shootings, told authorities that he bought the semi-automatic WASR-10 from Romania and had it sent to a retail gun dealer near his home in Allen, Texas.

Buyers purchasing weapons abroad must undergo a federal background check through the retail dealer where the weapon is shipped ...

It was not direct sales or shipping. He bought it from a US based distributor.

There are a handful of large importers who bring this stuff in, and all the distributors and gun shops buy from them, and individuals buy from those middlemen. Thinking about it, those importers would be good targets as their aren't many of them and they are used to operating in the shadows

I bought a Kia Soul. It was made in Korea. I didn't buy it "from Korea." I bought it from an American retailer.

Is this what the suspect actually said? Either he's deluded or the writer is. The use of paraphrase is very fishy.
