Column: Has Trumps cheese finally slid off his cracker?

Last week there was a sharp uptick in speculation that President Trump is a few fries shy of a Happy Meal.
Obviously, this is not the first time the idea has popped up that the commander-in-chiefs cheese might have slid off his cracker. Early in his presidency, and again in 2018, there was a lot of chatter that Trump should be removed via the 25th Amendment. Through it all, the president responded by insisting he was a very stable genius.
But after what has seemed like a personal best in whackadoodle statements over the last few weeks, cable news networks and prominent Twitterati are ratcheting up the talk that the presidents wheel might still be turning, but the hamsters dead.
Whether it was his tweet declaring that American companies are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for an alternative to doing business in China or his decision to cancel a trip to Denmark because the Danish prime minister didnt have a nice reaction to his desire to buy Greenland, or his suggestion that Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome H. Powell might be a greater enemy than Chinas premier-for-life, it did seem like the West Wings nurse might have accidentally switched his meds for M&Ms.
CNNs in-house media critic (who often seems to define media as Fox News) said over the weekend: Hes getting worse. We can see it. Its happening in public but its still a very hard, very sensitive story to cover. Im talking of course about President Trump, about his behavior, about his instability.

Whether or not hes a stable genius, the Trump on display now is the same one weve always seen. Whats changed are the circumstances. Like an unsteady man long held upright by pushing on a locked door, hes tumbling now that the path is suddenly open. He needs some new enemy to brace against, and hes flailing around in search of one. That makes him appear wobblier than before, but hes exactly as unbalanced as hes always been.

(33,356 posts)William F Buckley is gone; Nazis, white supremacists, and Russia took over the Republican party while conservatives drooled over possibility of owning SCOTUS.
Never Trumpers are still all for feeding the greedy and starving the needy, but they don't want foreign help.

He is, however, a cracker.
We need him to be removed, by any means.
The safety of this world supersedes, well, anything else.

(6,890 posts)Obama's blackness terrified all the then-muted white supremacists and brought them out of hiding. If there's anything to it, then all of his competence, dignity, class, and grace must have made it worse - much worse. It's not easy to wrap a sane head around, but I can just see that the success - even, or maybe especially the well-deserved success - of someone in a group which you have believed for your entire life is less that you could be painful and scary.

(6,890 posts)That's the basis of the Dunning-Kruger effect. I believe there's also a short video in which John Cleese describes it in his own way. Some examples of it are very funny indeed, but the truth of it really isn't funny at all.

Right wingers are now selling the "Trump's a lunatic" meme. Watch for that to ramp up in the coming weeks and months, especially as stuff like the Deutsche Bank information unfolds.
The strategy is clear: the news will report sympathetically about that poor, poor man losing his faculties, and therefore who would dare convict a crazy old dotard?
