Oklahoma City anchor apologizes for comparing black co-host to gorilla

In a tearful segment that aired on Oklahoma City’s KOCO-TV, morning anchor Alex Housden apologized to her co-anchor Jason Hackett after comparing him to a gorilla during a broadcast Thursday.

The racist comment occurred after the pair reported on a story about a gorilla at the Oklahoma City Zoo.

Housden ended the segment with the comment: “Kind of looks like you,” directed at Hackett.

“He kind of does, actually, yeah,” Hackett hesitantly responded.

The following day, Hackett, who is African-American, accepted her apology and said he wanted to take the experience as a teachable moment to his viewers.

“The lesson here is that words matter,” he said sitting beside Housden. “We have to understand the stereotypes, we have to understand each other’s backgrounds and the words that hurt, the words that cut deep.”

Good for her for apologizing but my God how clueless can you get?

We have some decent anchors on the stations here, there have been a few like this one who has no future in the business. She is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

I'm quite convinced that a lot of the anxiety some white people evince as their majority status slips away is that they'll be treated by others the way they've treated them. That is, when they're not in the majority anymore, they'll be subject to the same cutting slights and outright bigotry they've practiced all their lives. I am hopeful that in a couple of generations (and I'll be long gone), the descendants of Alex Housden will wonder why their predecessors were so anxious about not being in the majority.

Stephens, part of the NYT's right-wing editorial staff, has made a career out of raging against "political correctness" and "safe spaces," repeatedly standing up for the vile comments of creeps, without a second thought about the victims. I'm sure he would be glad to dry Ms. Housden's tears and defend her clumsy, racist comments....just as soon as he's through whining about somebody referring to him as a (brace yourselves) "bedbug." And no, I'm not making that up---see Wonkette.com for a fuller treatment.

Yet another blight on the Times' storied reputation.
