(24,337 posts)It doesn't matter whether it was a joke or not. He wrote out a credible threat
Just because "Kids do it all the time." (the mother's words) does not make it legal or acceptable
I wonder how she'd feel if one of my children wrote something similar about going to her neighborhood/house and shooting up the area and killing 7-15 people

(16,887 posts)They should be advising her of the complaint and why he is being arrested and advising her that anything that is said can be used against them (oh - and its being recorded). They should simply be advising her of getting an attorney for her son and to understand the charges that will be made against her son and his rights.
She should not even be attempting to discuss anything with them because while she thinks she is trying to help him, she may actually not be and causing him harm.
I hate this kind of thing - I hate seeing Police that should not be doing this (either to mislead or they are just stupid). I hate seeing a parent (who may or may not be aware or an accomplice to a crime) attempting to stop the police and think she is "getting info" when in fact it is them that is gathering info to USE AGAINST HER KID - all because she thinks she is helping him and is too stupid to realize that this may harm him?

(14,494 posts)"my child would never do anything like that".
And, if those kids were questioned about statements they made prior to the crimes, parents would say the same: "my child would never do anything like that".
Neighbors interviewed after the crime usually reflect similar sentiments. Some might say "he seemed a little strange".
Notwithstanding those kids who are born psychopaths, I blame parents for not teaching their kids basic sympathy, empathy, compassion and love and respect of fellow man for many of these youth crimes.
