'We Should Be Retreating Already From the Coastline,' Scientist Suggests After Finding Warm Waters Below Greenland.

I guess we've screwed up.

The ice in Greenland started the summer weak. There was little snowfall this past winter to reinforce the ice or to absorb the sunlight in the peak of summer, when the sun never fully goes down. Fresh snow stays bright and reflective, which bounces away solar radiation. Older snow is less reflective and absorbs the sun's heat. When the first heat wave hit in June, 45 percent of Greenland's ice sheet was ready to melt, according to National Geographic.

Arctic ice like Greenland's is also vital to removing carbon from the atmosphere, according to a study in the journal Polar Biology. The calcium carbonate crystals that make up sea ice trap carbon dioxide in a cold brine. When the sea ice melts, it drops that carbon dioxide into the ocean where it binds to algae, which stops it from circulating around the atmosphere.

As sea ice decreases, less carbon will be removed from the atmosphere. Plus, the melting ice will raise sea levels. Glaciers like Helheim are big enough to make global sea levels rise by one millimeter in just one month, which concerns scientists, as CNN reported.

to Arkansas with factories and employees. Bring your unions and especially encourage your workers that lean toward Democratic government. Move out before you are flooded out. Now, if you consult a map of the ancient earth you will see that, if you like the seaside, we will have some in Arkansas too. Such a deal!

Greenland alone will have a huge impact, but coupled with the inevitable collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet, I'd be mighty worried if I lived anywhere near sea level. Here's a mapping tool to allow you to view your location:

Bring your union sensibility, activist know-how and Blue votes. There are areas where 1000 votes would change an entire county.

Really-do it. Property is still inexpensive, rural areas are beautiful, KC is rebuilding its infrastructure and St Louis has that turn of the century Worlds Fair charm. Columbia is a sweet college town where Homecoming was first started. Oh, we have fun breweries, lovely wineries, great bbq and fantastic free state parks. We're also developing beautiful bike trails and have an incredible amount of caves.

Move to my neck of the woods and I'll take you around.

Waiting until deadly disasters disperse everyone, leaving many homeless and without work, will destroy the fabric of our nation.

It's not just rising seas. Other places are likely to become uninhabitable when the water runs out or wet-bulb temperatures become deadly.

When the Dust Bowl hit "Okies" were not welcomed into California and other unaffected states.

New York 2140

It came in two major events, precipitated by major sheets of Antarctic ice sloughing off into the ocean.

In a matter of days a fast (and permanent) inundation of coastal lands.

We are, in the end, a most short sighted dysfunctional species.

He references the Storegga Slide in his novel Stone Spring. There are two possible triggers for the gigantic prehistoric landslide, but the warming climate was the underlying cause of both.

Robinson’s 2140 has been on my to-be-read list for some time. I’ll get to it eventually.

He's a great writer too. IIRC I'd read one by him about killer storms. I'll check out Storegga Slide.

2140 is, IMHO, best taken as an adventurous meal of novel foods.
No need to rush to the dessert
It's like a thought exercise of how we'll adapt to a very different environment with its many new challenges. I still think about the unique community practices for surviving in the towers.

I sure wish the World's collective leadership would listen better to our great thinkers.

Greenland Lost 12.5 Billion Tons of Ice in a Single Day

The amount of ice collectively lost last Wednesday and Thursday (early August) would be enough to cover Florida in almost five inches of water

Again, Greenland Lost 12.5 Billion Tons of Ice in a Single Day.

I fully expect civilization to start to collapse sometime around mid-century, taking our tech-driven society with it. The inland areas won't be spared, though we may hold out longer than most.

But the main difference is, we'll still have our lives (in the short-term, at least).

The poor bastards unable to migrate from the flooded cities, broiling heat and devastated fields will die by the hundreds of millions this century.
