2. You laugh but think about it's strategic location as the polar ice cap melts.

At this rate, sometime soon Canada and Russia will be separated only by an easily navigated sea. Because of the ice cap, we have always though about russian aggression in the context of western movement. Once there's no ice cap, there's an opportunity for "northern" aggression.

Rather than ask why is Trump interested in Greenland, ask "why is Putin interested in Greenland". Imagine the tactical advantages Russia would have vs. Canada if they were also in Greenland.

And why would Russia want Canada...always remember Condi Rice's description of Russia..."they're like the mob, but instead of trash pickup, they're business is oil". Think about all the oil sitting under Canada and Alaska (recall recent activity moving russian troops east toward alaska).

Whenever I think Trump is making nutso statements/request, I always view them through the lens of "why would putin want this". And when the answer involved oil, I give it more credibility.

Why his involvement in Brexit...can anyone say "North Sea Oil Fields". Why Ukraine...deepwater oil pipeline ports. etc. etc. etc.

All just IMHO (and very speculative) but somewhere there's an endgame to all this in putin's mind.

I don't think he was smart enough to have actually played more than once, or twice. He stuck his counters trying to lockdown NA and promptly got steamrolled by someone through Greenland and never played again!
