Civil rights activist, Dolores Huerta, among several arrested during protest in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Eight people were handcuffed and taken to jail following a peaceful but very vocal protest inside the Fresno County Hall of Records Tuesday.

Wearing purple shirts, protesters filled the hallway outside of the Board of Supervisors Chambers just as deputies tried to get the large crowd to disperse.

The County Supervisors did not address the protesters since negotiations remain ongoing, but well known Civil Rights leader Delores Huerta was among the group of eight that was arrested and released.

The reason I decided to get arrested because I am angry that the way the home care providers are treated," said Huerta. "They have gone over a decade without having a wage increase."

Civil rights activist and labor leader Dolores Huerta was arrested Tuesday in Fresno while protesting with union representatives seeking a living wage for home care workers.

Hundreds of demonstrators with the Service Employees International Union, many of whom have gone without a pay increase for more than 10 years, gathered outside the Fresno County Board of Supervisors meeting. Fernández Huerta (born April 10, 1930) is an American labor leader and civil rights activist who, with Cesar Chavez, is a co-founder of the National Farmworkers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers (UFW). Huerta helped organize the Delano grape strike in 1965 in California and was the lead negotiator in the workers' contract that was created after the strike.[1]

Huerta has received numerous awards for her community service and advocacy for workers', immigrants', and women's rights, including the Eugene V. Debs Foundation Outstanding American Award, the United States Presidential Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights[2] and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.[3] She was the first Latina inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, in 1993.

To think that a surrogate of a so-called advocate of American workers would treat her the way she was treated is unconscionable.

But, "nevertheless she persisted", she prevailed, and she WON!

Also the actions of people who claim to be for "the people" but engage in toxic partisan crusades against genuine labor and civil rights activists because they support a different candidate.
