Mittens said it right in his speech. Can't recall the exact quote but, according to Mitt Romney himself, his grandfather (which probably included his grandfather's family) was fed by the U.S. government when he fled the revolution in Mexico. In other words, big government kept his grandfather alive. A campaign touting self-reliance and the evil of government assistance has a candidate whose grandfather was saved by the government.

This is the most off message convention I've ever seen.
