The Next Epstein Drama: Fighting Over His Mysterious Estate
Chris Dolmetsch, Bloomberg News
(Bloomberg) -- With opulent homes, a Caribbean island and a private jet to Jeffrey Epsteins name, the battle to claim his assets is on.
Even as questions swirl around the former financiers death while in federal custody, attention will shift this week to the next drama: identifying whats in his estate, who can claim his assets and which jurisdiction takes up the case. Lawyers seeking compensation for victims of his alleged sex crimes are calling for a freeze on the estate, raising the prospect of a legal process that could drag out for years.
Its unclear whether Epstein, who wasnt married and has no known children, left a will. What is known is that his wealth included a $77 million, 40-room mansion on New Yorks Upper East Side, the island of Little St. James in the U.S. Virgin Islands, a ranch in New Mexico and homes in Paris and Palm Beach, Florida. His business was registered in the Virgin Islands.
Its going to be incredibly complicated, said David Ring, an attorney in Los Angeles who has represented victims of sexual abuse and assault. Its going to be a lot of different folks who are going to be battling over this estate and these assets and I hope the victims come out on top. I think they deserve it. But I dont think the estate is just going to hand it over to them.

(51,627 posts)First they have to figure out where all his money came from and if it is legit. Then there are the attorney fees and there are tons of future bills as well. Those poor victims won't be getting much I am afraid. They were robbed of seeing him suffer for his crimes and now they likely will not get much in settlements.
I read that ne wasn't as wealthy as people think. Much of his wealth may have come from blackmailing wealthy and powerful people and that won't be happening anymore either.

(8,652 posts)I think most of his wealth came from trafficking. Word has it his recruitment of young girls was way more than he needed for his personal consumption. Suspect he had a business partner.

(32,748 posts)Apparently there's no bill of sale from when the ownership changed hands mysteriously about 15 years ago. Only Wexner knows for sure, now that Epstein is dead. So many questions, so many mysteries.
Epstein has one brother as I understand it, there may be other family members still living. No doubt there will be lawyers and probate hearings galore. He had a cockamamie plan to impregnate young women, so how do we know he hadn't begun that? There may be living heirs already.
