Prison experts are stunned and angry that Jeffrey Epstein was taken off suicide watch

Prison experts are stunned and angry that Jeffrey Epstein was taken off suicide watch
"For them to pull him off suicide watch is shocking,” one former federal prison warden told NBC News.
Questions raised after Epstein dies after being taken off suicide watch

Even before his first suspected suicide try last month, Jeffrey Epstein was perhaps the most vulnerable man in the federal jail system: a politically-connected financier accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls. He was, by all accounts, the kind of inmate that should have been under the closest possible supervision.

Instead, Epstein was taken off suicide watch in the days before he took his own life, officials told NBC News, a decision that baffled former wardens and veterans of the federal prison system.

"For them to pull him off suicide watch is shocking,” Cameron Lindsay, a former warden who worked at three federal facilities, told NBC News. “For someone this high-profile, with these allegations and this many victims, who has had a suicide attempt in the last few weeks, you can take absolutely no chances. You leave him on suicide watch until he’s out of there.

But Epstein’s status was changed sometime in the last two weeks for reasons that remain unknown, officials told NBC News. The decision would normally have to have been authorized by the jail’s suicide prevention program coordinator, who is ordinarily the institution’s chief psychologist, and approved by the warden.

“Once an inmate has been placed on watch, the watch may not be terminated, under any circumstance, without the program coordinator or designee performing a face-to-face evaluation,” according to the federal Bureau of Prison official guidelines issued in 2007.

These plots in our news every day are complicated and sometimes unbelievable. It would be hard to come up with stories that beat reading the news. Good times for comedians, however.

Never heard there were children who did as well. How strange that must have been. I was in the 5th grade and ended up in the bathroom crying with a bunch of friends. Southern Calif. I’ve always assumed that was the normal response of children in that moment.

What a horror. I was trying to imagine children in Democratic strongholds hearing about the current WH resident’s sudden death and can’t imagine such a response. But maybe it’s the legacy of the civil war? Decades of aggrievement and feeling besieged by change. There’s more fear and hate towards the other “tribe”?

self inflicted to get moved to a nicer facility. If true, that will explain him not being on suicide watch.

I suspect prison officials just saw him as another rich wuss crying about being caught and treated like us commoners.

If a person has attempted suicide it should never be taken lightly. While the public has a right to be skeptics, these professionals have to treat an attempted suicide as such and take steps to prevent the act from being completed.
That explanation will not fly with any review board. It would not only be a breach of protocol but would also be unethical.

No investigation or report by the DOJ regarding Epstein's death can ever be credible under these circumstances. Even if Barr recuses himself, the credibility of the DOJ on this matter will still be utter shite. No matter what the findings are, the status of Trump as POTUS and Barr as AG -- recused or not -- render the findings non-credible at best.

What a clusterfuck.

but making sure everyone knows what is expected of them. Michael Cohen is just one of many people who has said so.

Barr has decades of experience in GOP politico-legal circles, so no doubt he is capable of the same.

And then there is also the chance that the local people in NY just looked the other way when regs were not followed, because it is highly unlikely (i.e. impossible) that that handful of leakers in the FBI's NY field office in the fall of '16 were the only pro-Trump rank and file in the FBI/DOJ. Everyone knew Epstein could make trouble for Trump. Everyone knew he already tried to kill himself. Everyone knew, as Rosenstein pointed out today, this happens all the time. What's to say a DOJ Trumper didn't decide to risk the reprimand for the administrative snafu to help Der Trumpenfuhrer's big problem "take care" of itself?

Fault aside, devastating catastrophe for an underling, if anything goes wrong.

More risk for DOJ types than a 'reprimand for the administrative snafu'. Conspiracy law is very scary.
