Message to Senate from 243 mayors: Stop recess, work on gun safety

A list that has grown to 243 American mayors is urging leaders of the U.S. Senate to curtail Congress' lengthy recess, get back to work, and pass two measures expanding background checks for gun buyers.

The letter comes in the wake of the mass murders last week in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, which were the 250 and 251st mass shootings in the United States this year.

"The tragic events in El Paso and Dayton (last) weekend are just the latest reminders that our nation can no longer wait for our federal government to take the actions necessary to prevent people who should not have access to firearms from being able to purchase them," the mayors wrote.

The U.S. House of Representatives, back in February, passed companion measures, the Bipartisan Background Check Act of 2019 and the Enhanced Background Check Act of 2019.

The legislation went to the Senate, where Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to take it up and allow a vote. The White House denounced the legislation.
