He was actually superfluous. He was probably never going to testify and, if he did his credibility was so shot that it wouldn't necessarily have been very useful. There's already too much evidence in the record and too many witnesses for this to go away.

In fact, this may free some people up to come forward since he's no longer a threat to them.
