The Ohio farmer voted for Trump in the 2016 election along with more than 75% of rural voters in the farm belt.
Now Gribbs is pushing back against Trumps trade policies and the retaliatory effects on American agriculture.
Christopher Gribbs, a soybean farmer from Ohio whose family owns and operates 560 acres of land, told CNBC on Thursday that he wont be voting for President Donald Trump again in the upcoming 2020 election.
I couldnt vote for him. I have to protect my business, Gribbs said on The Exchange.

I was a Trump voter. I voted for the president, he said.

It certainly frustrates me. ... Hes lost on trade in three different ways, Gribbs said when speaking about how the president has disappointed him on trade deals.
Farmers are one of the biggest victims of the U.S.-China trade war. With China officially pulling out of purchasing U.S. agricultural goods, American farmers are losing their fifth-largest customer.

(5,969 posts)He sounds like a thoughtful person but as he literally said, he cares about protecting his business and he's fine with the other stuff that comes with a repub admin. In other words, all the other human factors and suffering aren't that important.

(57,093 posts)so a lot of the time they just double down. When they go bankrupt, the corporation farms will make lemonade at the auctioning of their farms.

(42,770 posts)it would be interesting to see an analysis of all who voted for him last time to see where the biggest loss in support is and why. Has any segment grown ? Etc etc. Would be good for targeting ads ( if we ran ads, that is). Hollywood zillionaires! Pony up

(32,639 posts)We need a Democratic message for them, and we need a candidate who will appeal to the Midwestern farm states. These Americans aren't concerned about race or immigration, they just don't want to lose their farms. Chump took advantage of them and now they're really scared. It's becoming obvious that Chump's tariffs don't help anyone, and certainly not the small farmers.

(3,666 posts)never heard a word Putin's puppet had to say. All they heard was an idiot hurling insults at everyone and they thought it was great. He told them what he would do. I have no sympathy for them.

(9,990 posts)Last year, the payment to farmers was ok, though it didnt fully cover their losses. This year, the formula for who gets what has been changed, and he is getting far less than last year. Given the power of the corporate farms, I suspect more of the money is going to them and less to the smaller farmers. That could make a difference in 2020.
If China wants to influence the 2020 election, all they have to do is refuse to negotiate any further with Trump. US exports account for only 20% of their GDP, and they can increase exports to the rest of the world (like trading oil for exports to Iran) to make up some of their losses. If Trumps trade war debacle is still going on in November 2020, some of his base will desert him. Unfortunately, if the trade war is still going on, well likely also be in a recession.

(63,221 posts)As usual, they love Trump because he legitimizes their selfish "me, me, me" attitude. It doesn't matter how much pain he is inflicting as long as they aren't his victims. But once they are feeling the pain, it's a different story. Now it's not fair!

(9,118 posts)I hate to say this, but despite our appeals to reason, our higher nature, and other tactics, the only way all too many voters can turn away from people like Donald Trump is if they take some hard thumping.
Mr. Gribbs, were sorry that youre having such a rough time, but we really thought you knew better in 2016.
