I won’t be voting for the president again, says Ohio farmer who backed Trump in 2016

Christopher Gribbs, a soybean farmer from Ohio whose family owns and operates 560 acres of land, says he won’t be voting for President Trump again in the 2020 election.

The Ohio farmer voted for Trump in the 2016 election along with more than 75% of rural voters in the farm belt.

Now Gribbs is pushing back against Trump’s trade policies and the retaliatory effects on American agriculture.

Christopher Gribbs, a soybean farmer from Ohio whose family owns and operates 560 acres of land, told CNBC on Thursday that he won’t be voting for President Donald Trump again in the upcoming 2020 election.

“I couldn’t vote for him. I have to protect my business,” Gribbs said on “The Exchange. ”

The Ohio farmer voted for Trump in the 2016 election along with more than 75% of rural voters in the farm belt.

“I was a Trump voter. I voted for the president,” he said.

Now Gribbs is pushing back against Trump’s trade policies and the retaliatory effects on American agriculture.

“It certainly frustrates me. ... He’s lost on trade in three different ways,” Gribbs said when speaking about how the president has disappointed him on trade deals.

Farmers are one of the biggest victims of the U.S.-China trade war. With China officially pulling out of purchasing U.S. agricultural goods, American farmers are losing their fifth-largest customer.

We need a Democratic message for them, and we need a candidate who will appeal to the Midwestern farm states. These Americans aren't concerned about race or immigration, they just don't want to lose their farms. Chump took advantage of them and now they're really scared. It's becoming obvious that Chump's tariffs don't help anyone, and certainly not the small farmers.

Last year, the payment to farmers was ok, though it didn’t fully cover their losses. This year, the formula for who gets what has been changed, and he is getting far less than last year. Given the power of the corporate farms, I suspect more of the money is going to them and less to the smaller farmers. That could make a difference in 2020.

If China wants to influence the 2020 election, all they have to do is refuse to negotiate any further with Trump. US exports account for only 20% of their GDP, and they can increase exports to the rest of the world (like trading oil for exports to Iran) to make up some of their losses. If Trump’s trade war debacle is still going on in November 2020, some of his base will desert him. Unfortunately, if the trade war is still going on, we’ll likely also be in a recession.

As usual, they love Trump because he legitimizes their selfish "me, me, me" attitude. It doesn't matter how much pain he is inflicting as long as they aren't his victims. But once they are feeling the pain, it's a different story. Now it's not fair!

I hate to say this, but despite our appeals to reason, our higher nature, and other tactics, the only way all too many voters can turn away from people like Donald Trump is if they take some hard thumping.

Mr. Gribbs, we’re sorry that you’re having such a rough time, but we really thought you knew better in 2016.
