“I want people to know that if they came to the country illegally 20 years ago, their children – – who are US citizens – – will be tormented — devastated, traumatized — by the fact that their parents have been taken away from them, for the 20-year-old crime of what basically amounts to trespassing.”
Because everyone knows that things we did 20 years ago should be held against our innocent children. Everyone knows that the children who were born and grew up in this country don’t deserve their parents. And everyone knows that Americans just don’t care about family values, or about “doing unto others as you would have them do unto you”, or any sort of idealistic notions of being the kind of country that treats people humanely, fairly and with compassion.
Everyone knows the Donald needs his stripper wife #3, but a six-year-old or 10-year-old or 12-year-old can get along just fine in a parking lot or gym or a cage without seeing the parents that love them. Too bad! Aren’t they lucky just to be allowed to stay, because of that pesky birthright citizenship thing? They’ve got their FREEDOM, what do they need their parents for?
And there’s a tiny tiny aside: everyone knows that if the hard-working Latino landscapers, nurses, farmworkers, nannies, and construction crews all get rounded up and sent back to some other piece of land in this hemisphere on this little blue and green planet, well then, tomatoes will pack themselves, the grass and shrubs Won’t grow out of control, the houses will rise up from the dirt as if by magic, and the little white children will do just fine crossing the street without holding the hand of some sweet Guatemalan or Mexican or Honduran nanny. Because, you know, these Latinos and Latinas clearly don’t contribute or anything.
Vaya Con Dios, Mes Amigos. Because Dios clearly isn’t gonna wanna stay here.
