A federal judge on Monday heard more than two hours of arguments regarding whether a less-redacted version of former special counsel Robert Muellers report on the Russia investigation should be released.
The proceeding stemmed from consolidated lawsuits filed by Buzzfeed News reporter Jason Leopold and the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), both of whom sought unredacted versions of the report via Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) filings.
As lawyers for the Department of Justice argued in favor of not releasing a fuller version of the report, Federal District Judge Reggie Walton seemed particularly incredulous of some of their arguments against allowing the public access to portions of the report that remain redacted.
According to a report from The Hill, Walton, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, was concerned about the conduct of Attorney General William Barr in the immediate aftermath of the reports release and expressed concern that failing to disclose the reasons for prosecutorial decisions only undermines even further the publics trust in the criminal justice system.

(51,593 posts)Buzzfeed has reporters who stand up for their reporting. This isn't the first time they had to do this. I think I recall they did this with reporting about the Steele Dossier.

(6,186 posts)We need to know how badly Barr skewed the results in the report to favor Trump.
If this judge doesn't open it for public scrutiny, will it ever see the full light of day?

(6,254 posts)Muellers report, I would have been brought up on ethics charges of misrepresentation and conduct bringing disrepute to the bar. Im talking about Barrs conduct, not the Judge Walton who I agree with.

(2,063 posts)Couldn't the ABA or ALA or one of those professional guilds render an opinion about Barr's conduct? They may not have the legal standing to reprimand or disbarr him, but a Letter of Concern or Op-Ed or something along those lines would be a very important counter to the White House's narrative about the Mueller Report.

(6,254 posts)complaint against Barr. Lawyers are held to a higher standard and cannot just go out and say whatever they want. They cannot be misleading or being the bar into disrepute. I think the article I read was about how they went after Clintons law license as a result of lying during a deposition.
But apparently you are. So if you're a member of the ABA or ALA or something similar, could you suggest that they take such a course of action? I'm sure plenty of lawyers are disgusted by how their profession is being represented by Barr, and would love to find a way to give voice to their feelings.

However, being a fairly stodgy group of lawyers who have probably seen more than their share of questionable actions and verdicts, they may be a bit hesitant to call old cronies into question.
