(9,895 posts)I don't care how he got the weapon alone...I'm more concerned with the victims, their families and the senselessness of this tragedy than on whether or not he obtained his instruments of death legally or not...but let's stipulate that it does matter, what then?
Legal guns and illegal guns kill people the same way:
Weapon is loaded from magazine,
Trigger is pulled, forcing the hammer to move,
Hammer drops and strikes the firing pin,
Pin moves forward towards the Cartridge ("bullet" to most),
Firing Pin strikes cartridge primer,
This now creates explosion from gun powder in the cartridge,
Explosion propels the bullet from the cartridge,
Bullet travels along the (mostly) straight line of aim at time of shot.
The bullet takes the forward momentum of the explosion and the slide takes the reverse.
Gun recycles for the next shot...
Legal or illegal, that is how you fire a gun in a general sense.
The problem we have, and the issue we CAN fix without too much trouble is the time from shot one to shot two and so on without reloading required...
High capacity magazines are an abomination. They serve only one legitimate purpose - fire as many bullets as possible in the shortest interval between shots and maximize the killing potential of the weapon. The caliber of the ammunition is also a concern, but less of one than the numbers on shooting...
End high capacity magazines.
Require licensing to CARRY and UTILIZE a gun, period.
Prevent people who should not have guns, from ever again getting a new weapon.

(551 posts)If the gun was obtained illegally, the other side can legitimately claim since existing laws werent followed, new laws wouldnt be either. Since the gun was purchased legally, we can rightfully say its obvious the law needs to be changed.

(82,849 posts)That's where I come down, that we need stricter regulation of firearms. "How much regulation is enough, then, you gun grabber?" Let's worry about that when we go a whole week without a mass shooting, hmmm?

(43,182 posts)It means our gun laws are too lax, and that is a huge problem.

(11,631 posts)If the law allowed him to buy the weapon that he used then if the law was changed perhaps the crime does not occur. That's the point. The NRA mantra on these machine guns and high capacity magazines is that if you outlaw them criminals will still have them and only law abiding citizens won't. Well if people are following the law and procuring the weapons they use for mass shootings then the law needs to be changed.

(32,006 posts)That is why crashes kill about 37,500 a year. That is 103 yesterday, 103 today, 103 tomorrow and 103 for every day following. Almost every one of them caused by humans. In addition about 4,000 pedestrians/bicyclists are killed by cars. I wish it were as hard to get a drivers license as to get a gun legally.

(50,928 posts)And deterrent is the standard? The roads are a deterrent to the vehicles. The mph signs are a deterrent. The stop signs and stoplights are a deterrent. The lanes are a deterrent. Weather is a deterrent.
And what the heck is guns are used by their very existence?
Wow!
