German Shepherd is left a 'nervous wreck' after being dumped at an animal shelter

Rocco the German Shepherd is left a 'nervous wreck' after being dumped at an animal shelter because his owners were expecting a new baby
Rocco was abandoned at the Dallas Animal Services and Adoption Center
The three-year-old dog was filmed cowering inside his kennel by a visitor
Preethi Pillaipakkam, who rescues and fosters German Shepherds saw the video and said was shocked the family had given him up because of a new baby
She said: 'But once I saw how underfed he was, it did not surprise me. It is probably a combination of change in family situation, plus not [being] the best owners in the first place.'

Since the video went viral, dozens of adoption applications have been submitted

After a few days of lightly treading his new environment, Rocco began to slowly open up and became his former self

If you man handle a GSDs ears when they are little, you can break the cartilage. Not surprised that Rocco's owner did that. Sounds like they didn't treat him well ever. He will thrive in his new home. I've had four German Shepherds myself. Wonderful dogs.

But no one manhandled him. He was born to my female gsd so I know his complete history. I started training him very early . Eventually he became my deaf husband's alert service dog. Since my husband's passing he became my service dog. He's past 12 years of age now so he has retired. Incredibly smart boy!

The former owners could have done than turn the dog over to a shelter. Keeping him and continuing to neglect him is among the least.

Glad he is in a better situation

People dump their pets for appalling reasons. The animals are distraught depressed and distressed. It is really sad.

There are situations where there is no choice, for example a person moving To assisted living and they don’t allow pets, but all too frequently their pet has just become inconvenient.

If you can, consider a senior adoption, these guys really need your love.

Shepherds are very sensitive. He's really a beautiful boy.

So good that he's been rescued from the county shelter and taken for foster. He looks happy and secure in the foster home, with someone who understands his needs.

cockerpoo, We visited them and the two dogs got along famiousely dispite their size difference. They had a large fenced in back yard, Our dog had his favortie toy, a rubber ducky with hime.. When we left we forgot his toy. Our next vist was year or more later and the second their German Shepard saw our dog she ran over to where she kept her toys and got the rubber ducky and brought to our dog. We were amazed.

It is hard to believe that people can abandon pets.

German Shepherds bond very strongly to their families.

Dumping him like that was like a grenade going off in his psyche.

I’m so glad that Ms. Pillaipakkam found it in her heart to take him in. He’ll be a great dog for her and her family.

and responsibile parents to their baby.

Their stated motivation in getting rid of their dog could be an indicator that they are prepared to do right by their child. But I find myself having doubts.

While it is true that some people can be kind to their dogs and terrible to their fellow man (Adolf Hitler and the killer from Silence of the Lambs come to mind); it is unlikely that someone who is callous towards the needs of their pets is likely to be good to their fellow humans.

ready for a commitment to a dog before they get one. It sounds like he's got himself a better owner now though. And it looks like she's got herself a great new friend.
