That does not have thousands of protesters blocking the sidewalks in front of its offices or studio?
Baltimore, I'm sure, probably has several stations based in Baltimore that spew nothing but racist hate 24/7.
Why do Blue cities sit idly by while Hate Radio stations do nothing but demonize and dehumanize the citizens of those cities.
Hampton Roads, which includes Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Newport News, Chesapeake and Suffolk Virginia have 790 WNIS based out of Norfolk VA that offers nothing but demonization and dehumanization of the majority of citizens in those cities.
We have close to 100 major universities that broadcast their major sports on Hate Radio stations that offer nothing but right-wing racist propaganda and demonization of urban areas all day long.
I don't think Hate Radio is sustainable without the economic power of Blue cities.

(7,542 posts)but if you attack the money gained from their primary revenue source, broadcasting college football, you will make it much more expensive for the one percent to maintain. It helps to defray the cost of their propaganda operations. It's beyond me why these colleges and universities are not shamed into ending these contracts with these radio networks.

(8,747 posts)Colleges and Universities care about the money they make from broadcasting. The radio stations are in business to make money.
If you think they should be ashamed, organize a campaign to do so.
As for me I don't give a flying fuck for sports period. So I do not know who is broadcasting what, and I do not care.

(54,770 posts)Id drive in silence if that were all thats available. Other than refusing to listen, and telling Deplorables who listen what I think of their disgusting junk, dont really think protesting is the answer.

(146,320 posts)We don't dictate content for broadcasters. Democrats and progressives support freedom of the press and speech. That's why there are no protesters.

(15,344 posts)Is the epitome of Free Speech!
You equate Hate Radio with the "Press"???
Holy Fuck!

(146,320 posts)That's also protected speech. But so is what the radio station is spewing out. Speech is either free or it is not. There is no middle ground. I choose not to listen to right-wing radio. Ever. That's also part of that freedom.
Am I protesting those stations? No, I'm not. It would do no good at all. The answer to speech you dislike is to counter it with speech of your own. That's what I do, online and otherwise.
If we could ban those radio stations because we find what they say to be hateful, someone else could ban my speech or writings.
You either have freedom of speech or you do not. There is no middle ground.
You're free to protest at that radio station. Are you doing that?

(15,344 posts)But there's no doubt it's a monopoly.
All I'm saying is that Hate Radio demonizes and dehumanizes the citizens of majority blue cities.
I'd like to see if Hate Radio could survive without the markets of cities like Baltimore, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Detroit, San Antonio, Austin, Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland. Etc.
Let's see if Hate Radio can survive with just Dumbfuckistan 'Murika shitholes.
My guess is that it can't. I don't see why cities and urban areas are required to tolerate hatred and racism...and also SUBSIDIZE hatred and racism.

(146,320 posts)There are hate radio stations everywhere in the US. In rural areas, they're often the only ones you can find on the radio dial. The station you named is located in Virginia. What could Baltimore do about that?
It has nothing to do with cities tolerating such stations. Radio waves know no borders or jurisdictions. They are licensed by the federal government, which does not have any real say about what content they broadcast, and does not pay any attention to that, actually. It can't, because of the First Amendment.
You're pissed off? OK. But, you're pissed off at the wrong people. The City of Baltimore can do nothing about a radio station in Virginia. The other cities you mentioned can do nothing about broadcasters in their general areas, either. They have no authority whatsoever over what is broadcast on the public airwaves.
What you can do, however, is buy a radio or television station and broadcast what you want. That is the alternative. There are many for sale at any given time. They're not cheap, though. But, you can't control where radio signals are received. It doesn't work that way.

(15,344 posts)That cities have no economic power?
Thousands of citizens protesting and boycotting their advertisers would do nothing?
Getting major college football games pulled from Hate Radio would have no impact?
Should a city that is, for example, 70% Jewish, do nothing if Nazi Radio is licensed to operate in their city by the FCC?
I happen to think that the majority citizens in those cities and the majority alumni of those universities CAN and SHOULD do something.
We don't just have to accept and tolerate hatred and racism.
Seriously, we don't.

(11,300 posts)I know some people don't like sponsor boycotts but fuck those businesses that support hate radio.
MicaelS
(8,747 posts)As MM said the FCC controls the airwaves, not cities.
And you can't have cities regulating speech on local media, that is a 1st Amendment violation.
How far do you think a city could get instituting an economic boycott of media outlets. Not very far.
So again, within the boundaries of the law, what exactly do you propose cities do?
maxrandb
(15,344 posts)But the majority citizens of those cities that are being smeared, demonized and dehumanized.

(94,657 posts)How is going to change any minds that would result in economic pressure?
maxrandb
(15,344 posts)Second, most local stations that broadcast this hate rely on local advertisers and businesses. Boycott those local advertisers and you'll get the stations attention that maybe broadcasting nothing but smears and racism against the citizens you're supposed to serve is not a good business model.
Maybe you won't get it shut down, but maybe you could convince them to offer some balance to the bullshit.
Third, and this is the big one, the stations that host limpballs, inshanity, Savage and other hate radio racist Sunday through Friday, need to be threatened with the loss of Ohio State University Football on Saturday.
This could all be done through grassroot efforts in cities that vote 85% for progressive candidates.
