with this references to minorities. He took some heat for it back in the day. In today's world, his political aspirations (if he had any) would be sunk in a heartbeat.

Funny changes all the time.

We were recently listening to an old recording of Dean Martin doing his nightclub act in Las Vegas in the early 1960s. Some of it was funny, some was silly and some was downright cringe-worthy. For example at one point, he sang a rendition of "I Enjoy Being A Girl" but changed the lyrics to "I Enjoy Being A Fag." The audience laughed uproariously but we just looked at one another open-mouthed. It was so tasteless, crass and rude but the 1960s audience loved it.

As Steve Martin observed, "Comedy is not pretty."
