Narrator: he'd never heard of "the Warsaw Uprising" so he talked about himself as always

Completely beyond parody: Asked if he has a message for Poland on the anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, Trump says, "I have a lot of respect for Poland, and as you know the people of Poland like me. And I like them. And I'm going to be going to Poland fairly soon."

There are no words.. I am literally out of words for this complete and utter wanker

during WWII. Obviously, the details are what makes it so notable, but just that basic bit of understanding really ought to be expected, right?

I know school kids are not getting that much WWII history anymore (or at least in many school districts), but damn, Trump is 73 years old.

He KNOWS, nothing, Jon Snow.

A 19 yo seemed oblivious to other mentions of WW2 events, but perked up while watching Darkest Hour and Churchill orders use of civilian boats to rescue soldiers at Dunkirk. I asked him if he knew what had happened at Dunkirk, and he said, "yeah, I saw the movie. Really great movie."

How can anyone listen to Trump and take him seriously?

He knows nothing.
His policies are haphazard and inconsistent.
He knows very little of the world and its countries.

You know, I can't even continue to write this response because he's such an idiot! It's infuriating.

Trump thinks no one sees past his deceptive bluster. He thinks he's such a brilliant orator that everyone is so astounded by his wisdom that they never notice he's really a moron and unfit for any public office.

Trump is a con man, a performance artist, an imbecile; not to be confused with a 5th grader.

To play devil's advocate, maybe the unlettered trump did not want to offend putin & russia, since to defend poland's uprising would be to castigate stalin & russian army, who could have easily crossed river in 1944 & helped the uprising Poles, but did nothing for months; their strategy being to let the Poles & nazi's fight it out, thereby saving some russian lives & depleting the Polish home army so Warsaw would be an easier target to subdue & subjugate. Which is basically how it played out, churchill's napkin be damned.

,. in the summer of 1944, by the Polish underground resistance, led by the Home Army, to liberate Warsaw from German occupation. The uprising was timed to coincide with the retreat of the German forces from Poland ahead of the Soviet advance. While approaching the eastern suburbs of the city, the Red Army temporarily halted combat operations, enabling the Germans to regroup and defeat the Polish resistance and to raze the city in reprisal. The Uprising was fought for 63 days with little outside support.
... Other immediate causes included a threat of mass German round-ups of able-bodied Poles for "evacuation"; calls by Radio Moscow's Polish Service for uprising;

Initially, the Poles established control over most of central Warsaw, but the Soviets ignored Polish attempts to make radio contact with them and did not advance beyond the city limits. Intense street fighting between the Germans and Poles continued. By 14 September, the eastern bank of the Vistula River opposite the Polish resistance positions was taken over by the Polish troops fighting under the Soviet command; 1,200 men made it across the river, but they were not reinforced by the Red Army. This, and the lack of air support from the Soviet air base five-minutes flying time away, led to allegations that Joseph Stalin tactically halted his forces to let the operation fail and allow the Polish resistance to be crushed. Arthur Koestler called the Soviet attitude "one of the major infamies of this war which will rank for the future historian on the same ethical level with Lidice."
Winston Churchill pleaded with Stalin and Franklin D. Roosevelt to help Britain's Polish allies, to no avail.

.. estimated 16,000 members of the Polish resistance were killed and about 6,000 badly wounded. In addition, between 150,000 and 200,000 Polish civilians died, mostly from mass executions. German casualties totalled over 2,000 soldiers killed and missing.

The Soviets and the Poles .. were working towards different post-war goals: the Home Army desired a pro-Western, capitalist Poland, but Stalin intended to establish a pro-Soviet, socialist Poland.

This was stalin adding insult & injury to previous injury (when he & hitler split poland in half in sept 1939 at the start of WWII).

having them, or kids like them, die protecting an oil pipeline or trying to impose brief peace in a region that has never had it, and is overwhelmed with enormous problems that won't allow it to continue, are definitely on my list of the things that could go very wrong. Not saying we shouldn't ever try, we should, and the world mourns what's happened to us because we have been an important force for peace and advancement of wellbeing. But bribing and/or coercing entrenched corrupt governments to behave a bit better are actually a couple of my favorite techniques of intervention where many things have been going wrong, by modern standards, for centuries.

Speaking of fascists and Trump, like you I've read about the kind of leadership the Republicans are quickly evolving toward, and war, big war, would be inevitable if people like them were in power for too long. Similarly, what's happening in eastern Europe of course. These are the kind of people who think willingness to make treaties and peace accords, instead of insisting on unconditional surrender, is a fatal weakness that will lead to national destruction.

"WARSAW, Poland (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump made his emotional address to the Poles speaking at the foot of the metal-and-stone Monument to the Warsaw Uprising, a heroic but failed 1944 uprising by Poland’s clandestine Home Army against the occupying Nazi Germans.

The monument stands near the still-existing entry into the city’s sewer system that the insurgents and civilians used to flee the area as it was being overtaken by the Nazis. At least 150,000 Poles — both fighters and civilians — died in the fierce street fighting in the uprising.

It was unveiled on Aug. 1, 1989, on the 45th anniversary of the start of the uprising. It shows some fighters entering the sewer opening, while others are fleeing a wall that is collapsing after an explosion. It is a site of great emotions and pride for Poles.

In 1994, during the 50th anniversary observances, German President Roman Herzog apologized at the site for Germany’s World War II crimes.".....(more)
