Hurd is a decent man. I think he just could take this shit another day.

It really is a shame, because now instead of a voice of reason some nut job Trumper is going to get that seat.

He won by less than 1,000 votes in 2018 and Cook Political Report said he's probably the only Republican who could win it.

With Trump at the top of the ticket, he was guaranteed to lose this time around.

He saw the writing on the wall.

Given that a level-headed incumbent nearly lost his seat, the soon-to-be candidate of that party might find the going quite a bit tougher. Particularly if he or she is pro-Trump. I sure hope that Dems will be able to field a top-notch candidate.

the increasingly utter exasperation in his voice each time - literally, "I can't believe I'm back on here having to defend this motherfucker!!"

I could clearly tell his heart was no longer in it, and his Congressional career was not long for this world.

Gina Ortiz Jones is running for the seat again and she only lost the last time to Hurd by 1,100 votes. Hurd very well may have lost to her this time, but the GOP doesn't have anyone else comparable to Hurd in the district to try and fill Hurd's shoes.

We're taking this seat back.

He barely squeaked out last year and being one of the sane Republicans. If a Trumper runs for his seat. The Democrat that runs should win.

Gina Ortiz Jones Is running for the seat again and she came within 1,100 voted of unseating Hurd last time. This time the GOP doesn't have a respectable moderate like Hurd to fill his shoes.

GOP in Texas tonight are not happy. They know this just cost them both in fundraising and a seat.

Texas GOP are losing their shit over this loss and the potential loss to the NRCC on a national level. A healthy chunk of their fundraising comes in via Texas members.

I'm happy to report moral is low among Republicans both nationally and locally in Texas tonight.

Wish I could give a snap take on my feels for that region, but I haven't been thru that part of West Texas in years. It's an astoundingly vast district. From when I've considered road trip treks out there, I know that to do it right, it'll take days and good confidence in my five year old car (she's a great vehicle, but ya know, the expanses between stops are imposing). I'd like to go to El Paso this year - taking in some of the 23rd along one of the legs.

What does occur to me is the potential for shenanigans on the rolls and at the polls. We cannot afford to take the district for granted. Fired up Dems in the region (everywhere, really) would do good to become deputy voter registrars by getting VDR training or sitting for the tests in the counties they frequent. Just search: VDR training, Texas, and the name of the county you're interested in. Otherwise, obviously, poll watchers and vigilance of the practices at voting locations are more crucial than ever.

Thanks for the heads-up on Sabato. Hadn't been to that site in some time.

with a district bordering Mexico who'd wait THIS long to come to his senses. He knows first-hand how much his party sucks.

YAY!!!
