A speech by Eastwood? Meh. I think I'll skip it.

(11,366 posts)of my female friends haven't either.
It's not like he's Sam Elliott!

(57,621 posts)I never miss his movies. You know who is a big fan of his? Roger Ebert.
sufrommich
(22,871 posts)pretty awesome star power. If he was coming to the Dem convention, we would all be thrilled.

(11,366 posts)And, I, honestly, couldn't care about boxing, either.
His genre, truly, is not my cup of tea.
That said, I don't like the romantic comedies my female friends DO seem to love.
I like thrillers, psyco-dramas, documentaries and well-done comedies (not "poop joke" comedies).

Jennicut
(25,415 posts)He did make some great films but his appeal is to people 50 and over. It is too bad he is a Repub, I always did like "In the Line of Fire" (about a secret service agent).
Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)You and I must be of similar age.
While people under 40 know who he is, I wouldn't say he'd make any of their top lists of favorites.
That was my point.
Jennicut
(25,415 posts)I would not say that I am THAT young at 36 but I would say Eastwood is more an actor my parents really like. I would say for me, I would rather watch John Cusack, Matt Damon, or Christian Bale. I will say that Eastwood has directed some great movies.
Hey, we have Eva Longoria coming to our convention! At least she looks better. Might get my husband to actually watch the RNC with me.

(28,158 posts)I thought it was good.
I know he's been in other things I've watched but I couldn't say what. I don't enjoy westerns so those I missed. Same with the Dirty Harry (that's the name right?) ones. Not my genre.

(13,390 posts)but pretty vocal will mobilize against this jerk. He opposes ADA then made a movie about a questionable euthanasia situation that some people with disabilities found demeaning.
Marr
(20,317 posts)He's made some of my favorite movies from early in his career, and he's really grown as a filmmaker. The things he's done since age 60 or so are his best work.

(135,425 posts)He doesn't like government regs re: zoning and things of that nature. This goes back to his days as GOP mayor of Carmel (he got support from Ronald Reagan in that run).

(938 posts)though I do wonder how they can reconcile this with, you know, the pro-euthanasia bend of Million Dollar Baby.... Oh well, "everyone makes their own choices."
cynatnite
(31,011 posts)He's actually a quite brilliant filmmaker. He's better at that than acting, IMO.
Also, he's quite moderate in his views. He was against the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, he's pro-choice, supports marriage equality and is a fan of Chomsky. Now, you'd think he'd be a lefty lib just by those views alone.
From what I have read the reason he endorsed McCain was because they've been friends going as far back as the 70's after McCain's time in the POW camp. He's friend with Rmoney, too. It tells me he is loyal to his friends.
The speech tonight will probably be tailored to reach out to moderates and undecideds. I don't expect Eastwood to slam Obama...maybe a few negative words at most. It'll mostly be praise for Rmoney, IMO.
Just my two cents.
sufrommich
(22,871 posts)the thought of him being there.
Lone_Star_Dem
(28,158 posts)He's not for taxing the wealthy, which was one of the things he and Ronald Reagan agreed on. Since he's wealthy, at least we can say he believes in voting his own better interest. It could be worse.
He's always been a Republican I thought, didn't he even run for mayor as a Republican once?
Tonight I imagine he's going to be touting his dislike of federal regulations and taxes. Two of his pet peeves. Neither of which takes away from the fact that you, and millions of others, enjoy his acting.
He's still the same person he was yesterday, and the day before that. He's just pimping him some Republican candidates.
sufrommich
(22,871 posts)at a time when the GOP is embracing extremism more than ever. They're dangerous, I'm disappointed that Eastwood is OK with that.
Lone_Star_Dem
(28,158 posts)You'd think the larger issues would matter more than a few pet issues. However, not everyone is wired to see things that way. It is what it is.
Maybe, the Romney person who leaked this lied to FOX, even. It could still turn out to be Tim Tebow.

(135,425 posts)Some people get rich and are thankful for their good fortune and they happily share it with others, and devote themselves to causes that advance the human condition.
Other people get rich and worry about how to keep and grow their fortune, and are resentful of needy people who might make them feel guilty for having a fortune.
They give the minimum in "charity" to take as a deduction, or to assuage their feelings of guilt, but if they are in the wrong place mentally as far as their greed goes, they'll never get right.

They're desperate to appeal to pissed off poor whites--they think they'll be stupid enough to overlook the corporate fucking they'll get from this party because they'll be too busy cheering on the race-hating, tough guy bullshit.
Is rMoney stupid, though? He's going to juxtapose himself with Eastwood? There will be comparisons made in people's minds. I wouldn't have put both speeches on the same night.

Lucky for us he didn't have to reach very far for that one. And then came his reincarnation as a simple man made of straw, for whom every facet of life is either black or white.

(1,435 posts)I think he wants to self promote, he has a new movie coming out soon, I just seen an ad for, on tv few minutes ago.
For every hollywood star Repugs have, Dems have twenty five at least. Believe me this likely won't be mentioned in Clint's obituary.
