Thirty percent (the GOP) is waging a last ditch war to enslave the other seventy percent (us)!
And that’s why the Republicans in both houses of Congress are allowing the Trump-caused humiliation of our country, along with the decimation of our system, to continue. In fact, the decimation of our system is the entire point of their seeming acquiescence to Trump’s vileness. What seems like acquiescence is in fact a decisive passive-aggressive campaign in support of his efforts.
Here’s the deal: The GOP knows that due to changing demographics, very soon there will be no honestly-gained way for them to possess broad national political power. They know they are eventually doomed regardless of tactics or strategy…..if they do nothing, the Democrats gain overwhelming political power for the foreseeable future, and if they play dirty, and the voters punish them, they would be no worse off than doing nothing.
So they don’t play dirty. Playing dirty is what the GOP has been doing for decades. They’ve gone beyond dirty……now they are in the throes of a last ditch war to assume fascistic control of the country. Again, they have nothing to lose, as long as they don’t care about history’s verdict, because the rest of the country cannot penalize them as a political group. The reason is that naturally occurring change was ALREADY going to make them a niche political player. Therefore, voting them out won’t hurt a power base that was going to be on the outs anyway. Yes, they really DO have nothing to lose!
So they cheated in the Senate to prevent a liberal majority in the Supreme Court, and they packed the entire federal judiciary system. They worked with Russia, some in the party purposely looking the other way, to win the presidency. They did everything in the book to prevent Democratic leaning voters from voting. They countenanced the romancing of Putin. They supported, or at least purposely looked the other way, as Trump did Putin’s work via the destabilization of NATO and the EU. They also supported, or purposely looked the other way, as Trump did even MORE of Putin’s work, via the ruination of the DOJ, the FBI, and the entire intelligence apparatus. On and on and on…..
If their plans blossom into full fruition, Trump gets reelected, goes even wilder than he has so far gone with his fascistic proclivities, the Trump-owned courts back up his authoritarianism, the GOP gets away with even worse electoral theft, they gain even more judicial control, gerrymander like crazy all over the place, further solidify control of state governments……
The result: Fundamentalist Christian principles are imposed on us as the law of the land by a coalition of John Birch Society types (think Barr, for instance), outright virulent racists, fundamentalist Christians, ignorant/easily fooled buffoons, and other similar malignant actors (those groups overlap). Then more far right/Federalist Society Supreme Court picks join in to end all abortion, cripple separation of church and state in general, reinstate prayer in schools, overturn Griswold vs. Connecticut (which established the right of privacy), and with privacy obliterated, oppressive surveillance is instituted, they outlaw birth control pills in a growing list of fascistically controlled states….on and on and on. Sure, the country will be a fascistic state, and the majority will be screwed, but the Republicans won't care....they'll be in charge!
THAT’S why I say we must fight, and fight hard! They are one election away from ending the American dream!
