I think they have only been in one war, the hideous bloody Iran-Iraq War from 1980-88. It was a draw. Even then it was only a draw instead of an Iranian victory because we, meaning the US and its allies, intervened to provide Iraq with a lot of logistical support and we encouraged Saddam to use the WMD he actually did have then.

And there were several ancient Iranian (aka Persian) Empires that certainly held their own throughout history before the USA was ever even a gleam in any ancestors of the Founding Fathers.

Even the Roman Empire never managed a sustained campaign of conquest in Persia.

Like most republicans I know in their minds Iranians are just more middle eastern Arabs. All the same to them. While the Shia/Sunni divide is the reason for their distain of Arabs may be the most obvious reason for their conflict, that conflict Predates Islam. I read about this over 30 years ago. Looks like I need to do more reading.

I had an Iranian acquaintance in college. Maybe friend. Study partner would be more accurate. According to him they saw themselves as the descendants of one of the great civilizations of the world. They have a history that makes ours look like Romper Room.

I would guess most Iranians see the Islamic Republic as just the current form of their society. They take a real long view of history. As does China for that matter.
