McConnell lashes out at media, Democrats over "Moscow Mitch" label
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) took to the Senate floor Monday to angrily defend himself against allegations that he is doing the bidding of Russian President Vladimir Putin by blocking a series of election security bills proposed by Democrats.
The backdrop: In the 24 hours after former special counsel Robert Mueller testified about Russian interference in the 2016 election, McConnell and several other Republicans blocked election security bills from being passed by unanimous consent on the grounds that they were partisan, and that the GOP has already take steps to improve security for the upcoming election.
Democrats and many in the media responded by questioning whether McConnell's actions would effectively amount to an invitation for Russia to interfere again in 2020. MSNBC host Joe Scarborough dubbed McConnell "Moscow Mitch," while Washington Post columnist Dana Milibank wrote a scathing op-ed accusing him of being a "Russian asset." In the op-ed, Milibank noted that McConnell had blocked attempts to pass the following bills:
"A bipartisan bill requiring Facebook, Google and other Internet companies to disclose purchasers of political ads, to identify foreign influence."
"A bipartisan bill to ease cooperation between state election officials and federal intelligence agencies."
"A bipartisan bill imposing sanctions on any entity that attacks a U.S. election."
"A bipartisan bill with severe new sanctions on Russia for its cybercrimes."
The big picture: McConnell maintains that he takes seriously the threat of election interference, and that Republicans have already taken steps to strengthen security. But just last week, FBI Director Christopher Wray testified that the Russians are "absolutely intent on trying to interfere with our elections," and that the U.S. has not done enough to deter the Kremlin from repeating what it did in 2016.

(11,738 posts)If he backtracks now, then he is basically admitting that he is both a partisan hack and was welcoming foreign interference. He's all in. I believe that he said that passing the bill would ensure Democratic majorities, but he didn't say that it would be because Democrats are cheating. He knows that in actually fair elections, our side WAY outnumbers their side and our policies are better for the vast majority of people.
The difference is that Republicans don't care if they hurt their own supporters as long as they win. Democrats don't care if people who vote Republican benefit from Democratic policies as long as government is helping the majority of Americans. We want government to work for everyone. They want government to ensure the powerful stay powerful.

(5,725 posts)I believe Putin's Mitch (AKA Moscowbot McConnell AKA The Traitorous Turtle) is finally realizing that the "legacy" he always dreamed of is now burning in the wastebasket, and that--horrors!!--he is going to be held responsible for his actions (or lack thereof) during this crisis. It's far worse than his eight years of stonewalling during the Obama administration and even that should've cost him everything. He won't be able to hide behind his wife when the tumbrels come.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will attend Fancy Farm, the traditional start of the general-election campaign season.

Beshear is challenging Bevin in the November election.
Bevin is returning after skipping the last two Fancy Farm picnics.
Senator Rand Paul will not be at Fancy Farm, his spokesperson saying that Paul will be on a mission trip performing eye surgeries.

(7,809 posts)Law enforcement and intelligence agencies all say that there has been and will be again foreign interference in our elections, but #MoscowMitch refuses to take a serious look at what House Democrats have successfully voted on (with no House rethug support) and passed along to the Senate. Then he whines that Democrats are lying loudly.
Well, MoscowMitch, perhaps you should show us what you and your party are working on. Wassat you say? Nuttin' so far? That's been your plan all along:
The reason, said Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) on Wednesday, is that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has decided not to bring any election security bills to the floor for a vote. Blunts remark occurred during a hearing of the Rules and Administration Committee, which has oversight of election administration. When Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) asked Blunt, the chairman, whether he was planning mark-ups of any of the several election security bills pending before the committee, Blunt responded that it would be fruitless to advance legislation that McConnell would not allow to come up for a vote.
Blunt also acknowledged that it was McConnell who stopped the Rules Committee last year from advancing the Secure Elections Act, a bipartisan bill to protect elections from interference. The committee was poised to mark up that bill last August when the hearing was mysteriously canceled the same morning that it was set to begin.
Hey, Putin's Mitch, get off your dead ass and do something worthwhile!
And quit your damn whining.

A law requiring a candidate to report contacts with foreign governments is not unreasonable. It wasn't considered a necessity before Fat Donnie became [p]resident because everyone else was patriotic enough to know intrinsically that having an outside entity interfere with our elections is wrong. (51,284 posts)Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, tried to pass the Foreign Influence Reporting in Elections (FIRE) Act by unanimous consent.
"This legislation is pretty simple, even for this body, it would require any presidential campaign that receives offers of assistance from an agent of a foreign government, has an obligation to report that offer of assistance to law enforcement, specifically the FBI," Warner said from the Senate floor.
Under Warner's bill, campaign officials would have to report contacts with foreign nationals who are trying to make campaign donations or coordinate with the campaign to the Federal Election Commission, which would in turn notify the FBI.

Think we should have a national telethon. You could get the top celebrity talent to perform and tell the world this is the only way to protect the vote since GOP won't. They would hate that negative publicity. But $600 mil is likely undoable. Maybe just buy for purple states?? Sounds corny..but at least it's something! If president stupid can do GoFundMe for wall (trashing us for not funding)...why can't we do a telethon for election protection and trash them?
