A suicide attempt doesn't get you better treatment. It gets you a paper suit and suicide watch. It sure as hell doesn't get you out, because being suicidal is an independent reason to keep you locked up.

I don't know why people think that a "suicide ploy" would be at all helpful to him in any way, other than sheer ignorance of how jails work.

And how rational and calculated was his decision-making at that moment?

I don't think this avenue will be helpful to him either, but that is neither here nor there when addressing what happened. Regardless of its counterproductiveness, I think it is more likely he was desperate to change *anything* about his circumstances than he was actually expecting to die.
