so I was in a major car accident Friday afternoon, grateful to be alive.

Just going to pick up one of my daughter's friends, this woman pulled out froma stopsign and it was a 50mph zone...I had only enough time to think "nonono don't do THAT!" and the it was over...

They had to use the jaws of life to get the other driver out and the teen on the driver's side was pretty fucked up too...

My seatbelt saved me, airbags didn't do shit ...I actually hit the steering wheel and have huge bruises on my chest. The dr said he was surprised I didn't have any broken bones or internal bleeding. Yeah I'm battered but alive.

Here's the thing though. Turns out my car had a recall on it...I checked the VIN# in the National safety database and there was apparently an issue with the Anti-Lock brakes...I stomped on that brake pedal but didn't feel like the car slowed at all.
So I'm gonna ask the CHP when I get the report tomorrow who to contact about that. The car is totaled and I still have no idea about the other driver or their insurance (will get that from the report as well I hope) There was also a grneral recall for that year of my vehicle for faulty airbags... scary stuff

For now I'm just glad my kids or my daughter's friend or my dog were not with me. And that I am relatively ok...just hurting and ptsd a bit.

First recall was for the passenger side. Hazard was if the were inflated would cause death or severe injury from shrapnel. They said not to seat anyone there.

I was driving my 90 year old mom to her appointments and made her sit in the back seat until I had time for the maintenance. Right before I took it in? I had a recall for the drivers side. Lol....they gave the same warning that I should not drive in the drivers seat!!!!

Guess when all those warnings came in? NINE YEARS AFTER BUYING MY CAR! NINE YEARS I WAS DRIVING A CAR THAT COULD HAVE KILLED ME!

only surfaced when they had some age on them, they were safe up to 5 years and beyond, if you lived in a dry climate.
Moisture interacting with the propellant and making it explode uncontrollably, or some such.

A car of mine had it's Takata airbag replaced with another one, told it would be ok for 5 years, buys them time to improve the design I guess.

... with no warning or reason. People were being killed, or injured and causing accidents because the airbags were malfunctioning. It wasn't every airbag, but it happened enough times that it forced the recall to replace every airbag of certain brands. My car was made in South Korea (it's an Aveo) and it's one of the very few economy cars that doesn't use the Japanese airbags.

Worse if you are on a motor bike.

Good you are ok, except for the PTSD, which fades away slowly, I've been told.

But ABS, airbags didn't perform as they should have?

Worthwhile for the rest of us to check for recalls, software updates. Too late to find out if something like that doesn't work right in the middle of them not doing their life saving job.

I've had drivers running stop signs and red lights this summer. I could have had 2 of them. I would have hit them, even though they ran the light/sign. How would one ever prove that? Witnesses? Like anyone wants to get involved.

So my defensive driving now includes - braking with left foot, which is on the pedal but not depressed at all times. I've done this for 25 years after traversing a torrential rain storm. It does reduce braking time.

I also watch what other drivers are supposed to do more closely at lights, stop signs.

And instead of merely watching down the road 6 car lengths to see where I'm going, I now also pay closer attention to cars that are immediately passing me in the oncoming lane. THIS, because of texters. I saw a guy in a flatbed truck texting and drifting into my lane. He recovered in time, I swerved in time, but that outcome could be different sometime. So better to be defensive/aware of what is happening.

Buckle up! You can't control everything, but you can reduce risk.

Take extra good care of yourself while you heal. Move whatever the doctor told you to move while you recover. If you have new, weird symptoms where you're most dinged-up that develop months (or years) from now - get that checked out. I had lingering issues after being in a less dramatic, but high speed pile-up next to a horrific accident, and while you should expect good outcomes, just thought I should share my experience if it can save you and others health frustrations.

Otherwise, feel the power and control of defensive driving when you get back behind the wheel. Even though I was a passenger, my driving skills really sharpened afterwards, and would go on to enjoy driving again, despite that wreck experience.

Want you to feel well.

I have an autoimmune disease as well, and know how it is to worry that weird/new symptoms are a sign of a new condition or shift in status. To take some of that burden off of your mind, I recommend what I would do: document what's occurred, now, so you can easily refer back if you think something is associated down the road. Take photos of bruises and scrapes to record the locations on your body for future reference. Save all your doctor's discharge notes. Maybe fit in an extra visit to your disease specialist to check your antibody levels? Then, you can focus on healing and living as balanced as possible knowing you're prepared IF something comes up.

Driving might seem strange at first. I remember feeling the road under the gas pedal more distinctly after that wreck, even though it was 23 years ago. I'd say work up to driving through the spot where it occurred. I became a much better driver after that awful wreck, and haven't been in any major wreck since despite living/commuting in Houston for 18 of those years. Now, all that said, I've seen some freakin' terrible driving manuevers in recent years especially, so use those blinkers and maintain distances whenever possible. And, no, y'all, I'm not the person who'll speed up to get around, then slow down to just below the speed limit. Can drive assertively, without being a jerk.

Want everyone as safe as possible out there. Doesn't hurt to take extra care in these times.

Mon Jul 29, 2019, 01:32 PM
Jul 2019

I didn't experience ptsd from the wreck even as shaken about driving as I was at the time, but I completely understand how it can occur as I went thru it after surviving a tornado, etc. The details of my experience are not important right now, except to say that you may want help from a counselor to help process your sense of agency in the world. If I could change anything about my life's history, I would have sought help sooner. I never heard the letters, ptsd, until three years after the symptoms started.

You can choose to have a counselor as a guide through this, and avoid some of the mucking around that I experienced. Hope this isn't too much, too soon. Just want to save you some grief.

When there is a recall, you are notified periodically to have it corrected. It is your choice whether or not to do so but the notifications will continue regardless (for legal reasons). When a vehicle's title is transferred, the new owner gets the notifications. If she was not notified of an uncorrected recall, and if it was indeed not corrected, it is the vehicle manufacturer's OR the DOT's negligence. Which is sufficient grounds for a compensation lawsuit.

That said, I will also pray the injured driver and passenger have good care and recovery. That the accident wiped out your vehicle is sad indeed. Hope you'll recover your driving confidence very soon. We had a head-on long ago at a much lower speed in our Jeep. DH broke his sternum. The hospital discharged him with dire warnings to return should he develop any problems like breathing, and I wore a bodily banner for several weeks from the seat belt. I think I'm still quite gun-shy of various scenarios other drivers present, especially where something just out of sight behind a truck or SUV and also when vehicles are approaching and entering too fast from drives and at intersections or tailgating. Add in distracted drivers who appear to think that insurance covers a multitude of inattention...SMH. You are absolutely correct to have strong defensive driving skills these days. Anything can happen! First, there's the trauma of the accident, then there's the trauma of dealing with its aftermath. So sorry it happened to you this past Friday.

I was at a stop light on 360 in Austin 18 months ago when I heard screeching. I looked up in my rear view mirror and thought I saw tires a split second before they hit me. My mine said, "tires?"

Turns out a person speeding down the shoulder was clipped by another person turning into a business which sent them spinning into me at the stop light. There were literally dozens of cars there and they hit me. A stopped car 1/4 of a mile up from where they were clipped. It totaled my 4 month old car and deployed 2/3 of all my airbags. My leges were shoved into the steering wheel right before I was slammed back into the right side of my seat all twisted.

The person who hit me wasn't insured. The other person just chose not to talk to their insurance and I still don't have closer.

That's a terrible thing that happened to you. Hope you're doing okay, as that must of been just awful, and not that long ago. Has increased my awareness to be more cautious when I let drivers turn in and out thru standstill traffic.

Austin has the nicest, most courteous drivers I've ever seen. Being from the land of aggressive drivers, Houston, it took me a bit to adjust to so many folks willing to share the road and let people thru. I'll be sure to watch at those long-assed turn lanes for the scenario you've described. Will tap my horn if I see a car coming up fast or could nose out a little if the coast is clear when someone initiates a turn like that.

Sending you some DU love

for you, FirstLight!

I'm so glad you're relatively ok.

It sounds like the woman pulling out should get the ticket. I hope they're all ok, too.

I remember having the most clear thought as it happened...that it was a life changing moment. I hope to some extent I am wrong, I'd like life to be more "normal" if possible... but what does that even mean?

PTSD is a serious disease a psychiatrist has to diagnose and treat. It is normal to have some shock and fear and bad dreams after a traumatic event but if it does not fade in a month or so and you feel like it is impacting your ability to do normal things, like drive, don’t be afraid to seek professional help.

If you were the original purchaser, the car manufacturer should have sent you a notice. Not sure what happens when you buy a used car. In either case, I would bet there's some liability somewhere. The important thing is you're okay. The car can be replaced.

I was in a bad accident 24 years ago. And I still feel its effects. Of course there was no diagnosis for PTSD in 1995. I have yet to find a doctor who will listen to my symptoms and take me seriously (After describing my symptoms to one psychologist, he said "You're just getting old.&quot

The other driver ran a red light while fucking texting and hit me broadside at 50 mph. He never hit the brakes.

I thought I was ok and was more worried about my wife and two other passengers. It turns out, I was the most seriously injured, it just took about a week to manifest. I have lived with back pain since that day.

Just my two cents.

83. Have a mechanic check the brakes ASAP before it gets totaled and taken away.

So glad you survived but don't let evidence get destroyed. Call an attorney ASAP and ask who they recommend to examine the car. Maybe also ask your car insurance company and make clear they CANNOT have the car until this is checked out to see if the brakes failed to work properly.

Airbags are supposed to go off if the collision is 40 mph or more. If they didn't, and you were going over that, you may have another cause of action against the car manufacturer.

Take care of yourself. Having survived 5 car accidents, none my fault, I can tell you that after the last two I went IMMEDIATELY to a good chiropractor (after xrays to assure nothing was broken) and got immediate relief before serious whiplash caused a variety of chain reaction issues.

I do have permanent nerve damage from one early accident and disk problems in my neck from another, but given how serious that crash was (a collision at 40 mph with a truck that ran a stop and totaled m vehicle) I am lucky it wasn't far worse. My airbag probably saved my life though it broke a rib. My face was just touching the steering wheel, I thought it would smash my face, when the airbag went off.

Get a lawyer Do NOT talk to the other side's insurance no matter how much they badger you, until your lawyer says it's okay I never talked to them until I sued them, last time around. They try to trick you into saying things they can use against you.

Another tip - don't let medical providers charge treatment to your car insurance co. Make them bill your medical insurance. My providers nagged and whined but I refused to make my car insurance pay. Here's how great that worked. My medical insurance negotiated down the emergency room rate by a huge amount, and I only had to pay a small deductible. I also forced them to pay the full ambulance fee they tried billing me for. Since I only had $5,000 in car insurance medical, I used that for every treatment NOT covered by my crappy medical insurance policy -- including chiropractic treatment and massage therapy, the two things that helped relieve pain the most. I also filed two complaints with the state of CA to force my insurance to pay for stuff it initially refused. They weren't going to pay for an ambulance because it didn't take me to their preferred hospital, but that hospital had turned away the ambulance when they called because they were full.

Get well soon - you will need your strength to fight the insurance companies and the jerk who caused the accident and win!

Not talking about legal stuff I don't know much about. But your health.

I’ve been in 3 bad wrecks. Once head on by a drunk at around 45 mph. Pre-airbag.

Once a multiple rollover in icy weather at almost highway speeds. The last one someone hit the very rear of my truck sending it sideways and causing it to roll a few times.

Only on the 2nd was I knocked unconscious and this was in the early 80s before we understood concussions.

But looking back is was concussed in all three! Just because you walked away does not mean you don’t have injury to the brain. You should really have a brain scan done. And if you start feeling confused in the next day or so, go to a neurologist!

Can’t speak about PTSD. Still not scared to drive but unless on the open road I drive like a grandma! Driving is dangerous. I accept the fact.

Ironically, in all three wrecks the other drivers got a citation. Small consultation.

Pay really close attention to your mental state the next day or so. If at all confused to to the doctor immediately!

So sorry this happened to you. It truly sucks.

Seat belts have saved my life 3 times. Thank god for government regulations!
