(8,090 posts)as a group -- make some sort of statement as well. I think that would be pretty powerful.

(10,879 posts)As much as I dislike both, I dont consider either racist like Trump.

(3,764 posts)I'm pretty sure she was a racist, or at least a classist. She famously made several statements that made me hate her.
"Almost everyone I've talked to says, 'We're going to move to Houston.' What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality," Bush said. "And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this, this is working very well for them."
And who could forget this quote:
"Why should we hear about body bags and deaths? It's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?" the former first lady said in an appearance on ABC News' Good Morning America that aired in March of 2003.

(34,111 posts)but I did feel sorry for them because mostly they were just being the same as a lot of other kids, just with a LOT more resources and constant surveillance.
Could they turn out to be good citizens? Sure they can and probably always were. Not a fan of Laura but I knew someone who grew up with both Laura and George. I think Laura was always good and probably a Democrat (I was still not a fan). George has his problems and I will never be able to forgive him the many many lives that were lost while he was in control (?) and the damage to our country, he was a travesty but I do not think he was racist. I cannot really say that being white, I could have missed a lot of things but my overall opinion is he is not a racist. I stand to be corrected.
Good for Jenna. I am pleased that she said something. She certainly had enough experience there to make a meaningful statement and she did not have to.

(1,117 posts)And that's what matters. Whether George was personally racist might affect perhaps a few thousand people at MOST over his lifetime
But his racist Republican policies, and his appeals to racism for votes that amplified racism and hate, affected MILLIONS of Americans.
Republicans want to defend people like Reagan and GHWB by saying "they weren't *personally* racist". But who cares? Republican presidents embraced racists for votes. THAT is what matters. That is what harmed the country.

(63,221 posts)It looks like the Bush girls turned out to be pretty decent human beings after all. They were a little wild in their younger years, but a lot of us were at that age.
